    The government wants two things
    1. To break the doctors negotiating power and
    2. Prescribers that will do as they are told

The nursing and pharmacy professions are both eager to take on the new role.

I think the Society has let the profession down by falling behind the nurses in terms of prescribing. Just think, how much more do we study at under graduate level about drugs and treatments and the nurses are out there running "Warfarin Clinics", "COPD monitoring" and when they become Prescribers, without having done a medical or pharmaceutical degree, they can prescribe! I think the system is nuts! I have got nothing against the nurses and they do a great job but what government wants is how can they get people to do doctors' jobs for less money and hence the prescribing powers are going to nurses because pharmacists would have been more expensive! Just hope that many of the pharmacists will go forward and become supplementary or independent prescribers. I don't think the GMC will be too happy about that, do you?
