  • Summer Industry placement

Any one have any tips on companies which may take students on (even for a day). There used to be a good site - http://www.pharmacy-forum.co.uk/stud...armcareers.com but that won't open till april by which point it will be too late. I intend to apply soon but need some help. Any tips would be great.

You may find the following links helpful for summer industry work. Not too sure about places which only take students on for a day. Depending on who you work for you may get anywhere between 2-8 weeks of work.

    Pharmaceutical Recruiters — ABPI

    Hope these help.

Thanks a lot for that. I will browse all of them. Do you think I just use the contact address of each and email them? A lot of them lead to the main site you see.

Phoning the companies direct or finding the names of specific people (for example Head of Research and Development or Manufacturing) can help a lot.
For some companies it's best to email direct or apply on their site (there should be a careers section in the site).

            Hi Meesh

What part of the site did you find confusing ?
There's plenty of info about all the major big pharma companies and the smaller ones, and who takes on summer students and/or pre-regs

              hey!!
I tried accessing the site but the font is tiny. I can barely read the contents

il try visiting the page at uni tomo and have a quick look at it again.

I'm hoping to get a summer placement, do you personally know of any good placements?

              Thanx anyhooo

                Re: Summer Industry placement

I think your computer might be a bit dodgy the link works fine when I go on it.
Getting a summer placement in industry is going to be tough because of more applications and fewer summer placements/pre-reg opportunities. You'll need to ask yourself why you want to work for a pharmaceutical company and research a lot about the kind of work involved.
I know of one person who managed to get some part time experience at Glaxo through a relative, although he didn't particularly like it.
A lot of the big pharma players take on students during the summer but I can't say which companies offer "good" summer placements.

                    Re: Summer Industry placement

It's definitely worth a try. I did the same myself regarding my pre-reg placement (in 1985!) by letter..I got about a 30% response, and was actually offered a 6 month each, pre-reg year split between Roche Pharmaceuticals and University College Hospital in London (after interview...Roche paid expenses).

Didn't take them up though, as Edinburgh beckoned.

Go for it anyway..you never know! Best of luck...

                    Fleegle.

Agree with Fleegle - may be worth a try especially for small generics. The problem is summer placements in particular are not well advertised, but if you can get one with a generic go for it.

                        dear giggsy
if your average less than 2:i/2:ii and you do not have a comprehensive record of extracircular activity/work experience, then save your time and effort and don't bother to apply for industrial summer placement.

the industrial placements are limited! AZ had a total of 12 summer placements for 3rd year students this year, from which they only offered 6 pre-reg placements.

around 50-60 pre-reg placements are offered by industrial companies each year.
if you think you are one of those 50 students, then give it a try. otherwise remmember that there are around 5% of students with a 1st and work related experience who will be competing for few seats. ( every year around 2000 students graduate)

simply, i am discouraging him to apply for an industrial placement after a couple of chemistry lectures i.e medicinal chemistry or natural products synthesis, he will change his mind.

giggsy apply for a hospital placement, easier to get one.
