  • 1st yr likely to be hardest year?

What is everyone's views on this. I found first yr hard, especially the organic chemistry side of things. However, I am now about to start 2nd year. Does anyone think it will get easier (in terms of topics) or will it get even harder. The organic side of chem stops here and nmr, ir etc come in.

Re: 1st yr likely to be hardest year?

Time past - the first year was to get everyone from 'A' level up to the same level of knowledge. Probably not much has changed.

The basics are important - if you encounter something you can go back to first principles and take it from there.

Top tip - use the internet a bit more for study rather than leisure.

Google 'medicinal chemistry tutorial' and ....

    How about this one....

    How times change.

If you find you have read something that has upset or offended you an anyway please unread it at once.

Giggsy I think one thing you need to take into account is that each university teaches different things in each year of the pharmacy course. For example at Aston there's dispensing in first and third years, whereas other uni's may not start teaching dispensing till second year.
The other thing is that at most (if not all) uni's first year doesn't really count towards your final degree mark, and thus there's not much impetus to get a great mark, so long as you just pass. I never found first year hard and second year seemed ok as well (didn't get easier), although there's probably an exponential amount of effort you need to put in through each year till you graduate.
Things don't get hard if you can keep focused, and most importantly stay on top of everything.

At my university, Sunderland, only the 3rd and 4th year count towards the final degree mark. That being said, I have definitely found 3rd year the hardest by far. I have found that the work has got harder as I've progressed through the years (just about to start final year). I found that second year was alright, but regret not learning the stuff as well as I should have, as it left a few gaps in my knowledge for third year. But I worked exceptionally hard in third year, and I think I've been rewarded for it so far. Whether your second year counts towards your degree or not, I'd still put the work in because the knowledge you acquire will certainly be useful further down the line.

1st year never counts but 2nd year too?!

Yeah, only the last two years count towards my degree. Good and bad. I didn't have to worry too much in 2nd year, but I was also too laid back as well

Re: 1st yr likely to be hardest year?

For me the 2nd year counts as 10% towards my degree the third year 30% and the 4th year 60%.

The first year is just to get everyone to the same level. Then i think that each year gets a bit harder.

If you work hard and keep focused you should be ok. Make sure you learn all the work that is given to you and try to keep all that knowlege for the following year. If you do this you should be ok.

Just do everything step by step and don't let all the work pile up try to learn everything as you go along. If you do this you should be ok.

at bath it started out gently in the first year (acting as a foundation year more than anything) then it got progressively harder to attain good marks. By the third year I found things really hard going - however the change of focus to more independent study in the fourth year really helped us put into practice some of the skills we had already had drilled into our heads in previous years (and thankfully there was a lot less chemistry!).

i just started my second year and it seems okay but lots of ppl keep frightening me about physical pharmacy

I think I found third year the hardest - in terms of workload and complexity of the work ... and the exams were definitely the toughest!

Fourth was a lot of work too but I really enjoyed the way it was organised and the way we were taught and assessed.

I found first and second year hardest but that could be because I'm a mature student. I remember finding second year particularly hard. The workload in third year was more full-on and independent but I did a lot better because it was less about knowing straight scientific facts but about applying clinical knowledge. The course was certainly a lot more interesting last year. Have yet to find out how final year is!

Re: 1st yr likely to be hardest year?

                        hi all.

just started year 1 and I'm finding the workload intense!!!!! Didn't fully understand the magnitude of the work they expect you to know. Every spare minute is being spent reading and making notes......not at all sure which topics I need to read in depth so I'm finding myself reading everything literally! How much can the brain actually take in before it shuts down??? Can't wait until there is less chemistry content! I'm really enjoying the challenge though but I hope in time that I will find the private study part easier as I get more organised.
I'm a mature student too, with 5 kids and I just started a part time job in a local community pharmacy hoping that it would give me an insight the day to day stuff (Saturdays only)......maybe that was just a step too far.............finding it all too much at the moment!!! Do any of you 2nd, 3rd and fourth years think that it is possible to limit private study to the week days?? I really wanna spend some quality time with my kids and hubby on the weekends........

Of course !! It's important to be able to prioritise the time you have free for studying and for relaxing, especially in the first year, so it's a good idea to keep the weekends free.
Having a saturday job will provide a wealth of experience and a great insight into community pharmacy. Keep hold of the job for as long as you can !
You might have to wait a while before the amount of pharmaceutical chemistry you learn decreases.

Definately! Don't forget that the non-mature ones take time out to socialise, play sports, take part in societies and what not so it's certainly possible to keep your weekends free if you manage your time well.

As Nikolai said the course will be heavily chemistry-based for quite a while. This was my weak point too but if I can manage it so can you. One piece of advice a final year gave me when I was in first year was that you can't possibly read and remember everything they tell you to read and to learn to be selective. As the year progresses you will get more of an idea of how much background reading you have to do and into which areas.

Thanks for the advice guys. You've given me abit of hope at least!! Its all about good time management. Yeah I was abit worried about trying to read and revise absolutely everything that the lecturers advise....I just don't want to fail as I've sacrificed so much to get to this point. Hopefully with time I will get better about being more selective when it comes to private study material, at least then hopefully it won't take me as long to get through 1 set of lecture notes and the 'further reading' material!!!!
Thanks for the encouragement and as for the chemistry.....guess I'll have to keep giving that an 'A' for effort for the next couple of years. It's not too bad I suppose!!!!

                              Thanks guys!!
