  • am I late for a pre-reg application?

    Hello evb!
I've just finished my third year and I am now looking for info about my 2009/10 pre reg placement. Well, what I want to know is whether I am too late or if there is still time for such a research. I was too stressed with my exams all this time and wanted to make sure I would pass my third year before applying for 2009! Additionally, I wanted to have some really good marks in my hands, to apply later for a placement, which I managed. The result of my 'studying isolation' from March to June was to miss not only all the informative visits of companies to the uni but also most deadlines. So I am really freaked now ..

PS: I definitely want to have a community pharmacy placement (not minding if it is a small independent pharmacy or Boots).

PS2: Ehmm...I don't really have a tutor, who knows me well enough to send references together with my application Unfortunately, I have always been a rather shy student, focusing on studying than socialising. Could this influence my application?

Thanks in advance for your replies!!

Re: am I late for a pre-reg application?

    Hi Para,

I am a third year student too... Most of the major chains have closed their applications, and lots have already made offers... I was going to suggest Hospital (which is where I hope to be), but then I read your last statement about looking for community. Your best option is to try the Pharmalife website ([ w w w . p h a r m a l i f e . c o . u k ]) and select Community Pharmacy training.

I have completed the same information, but for hospital. I'm afraid to say, however that I could not find the closing date (for hospital it is the 30th Aug). I could still log in, so it looks active - they tend to deal in small independents.

They do require an academic reference. I recommend that you email your uni tutor... They will be used to students having very little contact, but still wishing to use them as a referee... But always ask (out of courtesy!!)

    HTH! Good luck!!

      am I late for a pre-reg application?

NO you are not, call it your lucky day but loads of places are still available.

for the 1st time ever, Boots is advertising for places to 'external candidates i.e those who did not do a 3rd year summer placements with them'

they sent an e-mail to all school of pharmacies stating that' due to some expansion stratigies through the country we are willing to take in 'external candidates'.

i don't get this story as simply if this was the REAL reasoning, why they left it for a late time? i believe they had a very high rejection rates this year as they are considering to recruite some pre-regs all over the country, apart from london.

DO YOU HAVE A PRE-REGISTRATION PLACEMENT FOR 2009?

IF the Answer is NO….please read on

This year, due to expansion of our successful preregistration programme, we have places available to students for the 2009 intake who did not complete the usual requirement of a Summer Placement with Boots and have yet to secure a preregistration place.

Lloydspharmacy have around 20 remaining places, the situation is the same for superdrug!

the situation is the same with large independents.

my advice is; do not e-mail and wait for a reply, simply contact the ppl in charge of pre-reg training/recruitment.

I and others had to fill in applications, go for interviews and even prepare for 10-15 mins presentation about different topics to get a place. my friend rang one of Boots pre-reg recruitment office, managed to get an option to pick 1 pharmacy from 3 within the area of his interest, with no formal application form of interview, he just need to go and have a chat with pharmacist.

something wrong is going on, more students are accepting hospital pre-reg offers and rejecting community ones.

What is wrong with that? The pay is better and I think the training opportunities are better. Also its so much easier to move from hospital to community than the other way round. Unless you know that you want to be a community pharmacist (and sometimes even then) the smart move is to go for hospital training.

A lot of students at my university have gone for hospital but I don't really understand why community pharmacies are struggling to get pre-reg students There are fewer hospital pre-reg positions available now with NHS cut-backs but at the same time there are more and more pharmacy graduates being churned out. Where are they all going if not into community? Obviously there's industry but that's hardly a huge chunk, and I know someone who will be ditching pharmacy altogether after the degree. I'd still have thought there'd be plenty to go around for community though.
