    I guess it is impossible but what would happen theoretically if the FTSE 100 reached zero??

    What is often not realised is that the FTSE100 isn't a like-with-like comparison. Companies in the index today weren't there a year ago. It's revised every so often to include the current "top 100" companies, and to remove those which aren't now or don't exist any longer. For example if and when HBOS and LLoyds TSB actually merge, only (presumably) LTSB will be in, and HBOS out, and something else will come in. Boots are another example. When they were bought by the private equity group (which doesn't have traded shares) they were removed.

    As a statistical index it's interesting, but no more than that.
