  • Well Done Pharmacists!

We really do a good job. I hope to see the day when pharmacists are really well-respected.

"Meta-analysis and systematic review: Pharmacists versus non-pharmacists in adverse drug event detection

A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy has evaluated whether pharmacists or other healthcare professionals as “chart reviewers” detected higher rates of adverse drug events (ADEs).

The analysis included data from 13 studies which investigated the rate of identifying ADEs amongst various healthcare professionals. Significant heterogeneity was present among the nine pharmacist-led studies and among the four studies where non-pharmacists were chart reviewers, and this limited the importance of a pooled summary estimate. The following results were reported:
    • Using random effects meta-analysis, the mean of the weighted incidence rate detected by pharmacists was 0.33 ADE per admission (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.17–0.50); the mean was 0.16 ADE per admission (95% CI, 0.11–0.22) with detection by non-pharmacists
    • A significant difference (p = 0.003) existed between the ADE rate reported by pharmacists (median = 0.23; interquartile range [IQR], 0.18–0.44) and that of nonpharmacists (median = 0.12; IQR, 0.02–0.49).

The authors concluded that pharmacists make the most prominent contribution in identifying inpatient ADEs."
