Hi. I'm a newly qualified community pharmacist, and am on about £40k per year as an employee. As a locum you could get up to £50k or so I gather. As for hospital I belive starting pay is in the £25-30k range. Industry I have no idea.

My mate went back into industry a couple of years ago. At the time I was earning £38,500 in a shop, and he was on £25,000. It goes up if you get promoted of course.

The average pharmacist salary is about 40k I'd say, yes. Why the confusion?

Depends on your career path - Superintendent for a large multiple will pay more- but could take a few years.

Open your own pharmacies - sell out and race Ferraris.

              It's all down to you.

I said that was what the average pharmacist earns. A Merdedes is still only a car, but if your motivation for doing pharmacy is simply money maybe you'd be better doing something else. It all depends on what exam grades you get, but you'd need to be a GP or dentist to get an average salary such as 80k.

Pharmacy is only a comparatively good salary for the first 2-3 years after graduation. If you did any decent subject at Uni (i.e. not knitwear design or social pavement issues) you'll start off after graduating on 20K but after a few years you be beating the pharmacy wage.

But at the end of the day, whatever subject you do, it's all down to you. Get the right work experience, a good degree grade and come decent charity work and you'll be picking your employer not them picking you.

                      NO
As I've said it's up to you - as a specialist independent pharmacist prescriber you could be on the same rate as a doctor prescriber with the same speciality.

Invest in your own pharmacies and there is no limit - Anwar Patel recenty sold 100+ branches to Lloyds for over 100 million.

can i just ask whats the max pay you can get in community and hosp pharm because people tell me community pharm is higher than hosp. Having said all this i would quite like to be an industrial pharmacist but can anyone tell me the jobs involved.

You really can't say what the max pay is as it depends on the job and the location. In general pay in Community is better (certainly early on in career). However, a Chief Pharmacist in a large teaching hospital may have a six figure salary. However, comparable posts in Community (e.g. Superintendent of a multiple) is also very well paid. In addition, if you have your own business your earning potential in Community is vast.

So you really can't put figures on it in a hard and fast way. What's more this is the career that you will be following for possibly the next forty years - so you have to enjoy what you do. Money isn't everything - despite what you might think at the moment. I left a lucrative career to pursue my interests in pharmacy as a mature student but that's another story.

Also consider that community pharmacy is moving away from a supply-based contract to a cognitive contract. Under a supply based contract, pharmacists will be paid pretty much the same as there is not a huge incentive for an employer to pay more to good pharmacists. Elaine and Linnear get paid pretty much the same as a locum who just turns up and checks scripts and doesn't do anything else.

Hopefully under a cognitvely based contract there will be an incentive for employers to pay pharmacists that provide good clinical services more, or increase bonus payments. My employer pays a £5 bonus for each MUR you do, this should continue with over services. Why should employees/locums provide extra services so contractors get paid more, without the pharmacist getting anything in return?

I think they still get a final salary pension in hospital.
No chance of that in community.
