  • They said you would----

Box of 21g x 2 inch micolance needles arrived from wholesaler. In came customer who said 'BTC cannot do special orders, they said you would do it'.

It the transpired that he only wanted 14 needles from a full box of 200 retailing at £7.60. I said that in almost 60 years I had never had a request for these needles and if we split the box we would be left with 86 to throw away. 'Oh' says he, 'but BTC said you would do it'.

I regret I told him that £7.60 was not a large sum and he either took the full box or we would return it to the wholesaler. He took it.

Another person, not a regular pt, came in and asked for a box of thyroxine as she had moved to Norfolk and not yet registered with a Dr. She had been told by someone that we could 'give' her some.

I said that I could make an ES of 5 days supply and that this would cost £3.00. 'But I don't pay' was the refrain and muttering under her breath at how disgusting it was that she could not just be given her tabs, she stormed out.

Why it is that Drs and other chemists can make pronouncements on our behalf, I just do not know. They can say No, but we carry the approbium.

it's not because they believe for one iota that you would "do it", they're jus passing their problems on to you.

You should have enquired who told her that, Just because the goverment subsidises (heavily) for those who qualify, people end up taking liberties and expect everything for free, alot of them are actually ablivious to the true nature of healthcare provison, especially the true cost of healthcare.

i often quietly inform the whinging paying patient picking up their 3X seretide evohalers costs a damn sight more than the £7.10 they have to 'get ripped off' for.

I also make it clear that when someone has an ES it's not done via the NHS so they have to pay me the cost of the medicine - in other words we don't give the stuff wot costs us lots out for free - at some point someone picks up the bill. In the case of the ES, it's them.

but yes, other professionals seem all to eager to pass the buck on to us when they can't come up with an answer / can't be arsed to deal with something challenging.

After all, we're the last link in the chain, so have to bear the brunt of the flak from all sides.

Well I'm not having any of that nonsense. I charged someone £4.50 this morning for an ES for a ventolin MDI- the last 2 times I've done it as a "loan", but this time I'd had enough, I said "I'm sorry, this time I'll have to charge you". So there. Period.
Then there was Mr Jones: requested all his meds via PCS on aug. 18th, Rx came on the 19th, delivered to his home on the 20th; but the doxazosin wasn't issued because it had last been issued on 30 july; In his bag delivered on aug 20th we put a note stating that doxa not issued as not due yet, but patient only read the note today!!! And of course, he'd run out completely, and how could I possibly say that they weren't due...!!!

Had a private Rx in this morning for 4 x 25mg viagra.

Quoted the guy about £26 if I remember correctly and his response was 'the doctor told me to pay no more than £16'

His GP has obviously looked in the BNF and quoted him the cost price.

I explained that is what we pay for them and he wouldnt budge!!!

Why the extra £10? was his next question.

Explained the mark up and dispensing fee's and the end cost depends on how cheap the pharmacy can buy the drug in for!

His response to that was 'well Im not paying you to do your job!!!!!!'

I couldnt believe me ears!!!! Its not as if I was asking for a tip for goodness sake!!

I hate it when doctors do that.

He left on a mission to get his viagra cheaper than pfizer sell them to us!!

            NUTTER!!!!

I was working in a store the other week (relief dispensing). Some guy came in to collect a viagra script - the script had been torn in half horizontally and stuck back together again. Apparently he had come in two days prior with the script (untorn) was told the price and entered into a debate with the regular staff about it - aparently unhappy with the price he said he could get it a lot cheaper off the internet and proceeded to tear it in two! The next day he came back with it sellotaped together - obviously we are charging a lot less than the going rate on t'net.

Re. the GP (God's Prophet) quoting cost from the BNF..This happens all the time!

If they can't grasp the concept of the difference between trade and retail price, and profit on-cost, then it isn't much of a surprise that they are told what they will be paid by the government...

                      Re: They said you would----

had a good one today. Nurse phones up about a script dispensed a couple of days ago - prescribing error - a one off paying patient so no pmr to check against. Nurse asks us to accept back the wrong unopened medicine (thats been sitting at the patient's house for a couple of days) and do a straight swap for a new prescription for a drug which costs LESS. After picking myself up off the floor i politely told her that if we make a mistake we are expected to rectify that mistake at our own financial loss and that the surgery should too. Nurse asks what i mean - i then put it a bit blunter - if we drop a bollock its our fault and we pay, if you drop a bollock its your fault and you have to pay.

what a lovely start to the day. at least they phoned ahead to check instead of just sending the patient along....

Have you ever heard of a surgery refunding a Rx charge like this?

We've had many incidents like this over the years!!

yes when the surgery drops a bollock like that i make them pay out of their petty cash for the patient's script charge. It is possible, normally after talking to the surgery manager.

                            RE:Viagra, Melons anyone??

In this matter i would NOT even take my time out to expain about the markup, dispensing fee and VAT, id jus say how the doctor knows about it as all they do is write the Rx and hand it to patients, the the pharmacist is the one who deals with the buying, selling and supply of meds, and maybe the £16 was probably what the doctor paid for one tablet in the blackmarket.

any further argument from the patient tell them the price and say thats what you charge any other patient, take it or leave it (and leave us), direct them to another pharmacy and ask them to go and check what theyre charging (helps if they're charging more).

I generally suggest that they contact the PCT to see if they can get a refund.
