  • Private Prescription expiry date

Again Im sorry for being a DIV but. . . .

How long are private scripts valid for? Ive scoured the MEP without any luck.

I can find how long NHS Rx are valid for, easy peasy but for the life of me I cant find the info for Private scripts.

The reason Im asking is that in a branch I work the old fella's have a habbit of bringing private viagra scripts in at yearly intervals, one chap yesterday had one from 2006 with 13 repeats on and he was only on 4th repeat so thats two a year and his last repeat will be in 2012 - surely it will no longer be valid will it? maybe it will - I dont know!!! thats where you lot come in and help me.

    Current MEP page 11

All scripts (NHS or private) must be dispensed within 6 months of appropriate date (28days for CD scripts)

If repeatable scripts (i.e. private script with direction on it to repeat) then must be dispensed for first time within 6 months of date on script.

Personally if >6-12 months old (and had had inital dispensing and came for repeat) I might check with prescriber that still clinically appropriate to dispense - would depend what drug etc it was for.

Have seen one NRT private script that was 8yrs old (when I saw it, who knows by now!) with 200 repeats on it - patient addicted to Nicotine gum instead of cigarettes and GP would rather private rx gum than pt went back onto cigarettes as more beneificial to pt's COPD.

      Supplementary question

Does a private prescription expire with the death or removal from the register of the prescriber?

No idea - never thought of that.

I would assume so, would it be the same if prescriber retires as would still be removed from their profession's register?

Why not ask RPSGB and get a "long" answer that's not really an answer back

Had to attach a few extra sheets of paper to it.

Not sure if it has to be stamped everytime if being done at same pharmacy - anyone know the legality on this for future reference?

Similar problem - had viagra rx 4 tabs repeat x 24 and guy had had it dispensed 7-8 times in a month.
Queried with GP - said fine
Queried with police inspector - not sure of outcome but knew straight away which GP had written it.

Difficult one as clinically probably not appropriate to use >once per day but how can you say how many times/month it can be used esp if on private Rx.

?whether being flogged down the local pub hence involvement of police inspector.

Surely there are no legal implications to the NRT one as they are P meds therefore can supply with out a prescription.

If some one is getting NRT on a private script then surely its cheaper and less hassel just to supply it off prescription as there will be dispensing fee's involved.

                  but what do I know????????

No VAT on private Rx and slightly outside product licence to supply for such a long period. I'm happier to continually supply it with GP involvement.

Sounds like a candidate for Eli Lilly's new Cialis 2.5mg or 5mg once daily tablets.
