At the very least, I would require sight of these "new guidelines", and be happy with their source.

When a strange one like this pops up, it's a good idea to ring the manufacturer's drug information department..I've always found them very helpful.

I am not aware of the guidelines in both new Zealand at America it is licenced at up to 20mg daily...as far as I am aware always has been.

I have a friend in Englnad who recently also commented how the information leaflet not spc now stated up to two a day.

Had a script once for Astemizole 2 BD didn't dispense it though - got straight on to doctor and got it changed to 1 od, this was the days before it was withdrawn from use.

Wasn't one of the antihistamines licensed for asthma, think it was Ketotifen?

In NZ we started seeing 20mg a day since the introduction of a generic. Looks like their bio-availabilty is not as good as the brand Zyrtec and doctors double up the dose to get the generic to work.

One thing to remember, those "non sedating" antihistamines are only such at recommended doses and the higher the dose the more likely they'll cross the CNS barrier and cause sedation as well.
