    Tax and Expenses Query?!?!?

    Hi everyone...

just wondering if you can help with this query...I've been offered fixed locum shifts 50 hours a week in a store for £45000/year ...I have been told to be paid as locum...however the pharmacy is quite far and according to my calculation it will cost me £7000 per year for petrol...Plus I need to buy a car as well, which will be another cost...

Now considering what explained I am not sure how this locum pay can pay towards expenses (petrol and car) and how much I will be left with...

Would appreciate help from anyone who's had the experience....

    Many tnx

How many weeks per year? 4 weeks hols = 48 weeks x 50 hours = 2400 hours into £45k = £18.75/hour,. Not impressive, at all. And no sick pay, holiday pay etc etc.

Meanwhile, buy a motorbike. You'll save more in petrol than it costs, even after buying a car as well, for the icy times

As for expenses, work out business vs private use as a % and claim that % of costs back against tax (so pay 40% of that total less tax) or on a per mile basis, as you chose. HMRC website explains it all, quite well.

Be prepared to be challenged as to your locum status by HMRC if you're only working for one company, including whether you can claim for travel at all.

One of the criteria would be who pays your NHI. If you do, OK. However, if only work for one employer then will be regarded as employed.
You must work for at least two, preferably three. I used to work for SD,BTC and an independent.

Many thanks for your comments guys...

The job is based on doing evening shifts plus sat and sun full day, and the reason for doing this is due to day time commitments...

With regards to being considered as locum by HMRC...should it be ok if I do one or two days locuming in different stores in the morning?

Also is NHI same as National Iinsurance Contributions?

This is not a locum position. At 50 hours per week based on a yearly wage offer, it is full time employment. Tread carefully.

What fleegle said. You are an EMPLOYEE. Fact. Be prepared for HMRC to bend you over their stoney knees. It won't be pleasant (unless you're partial to that sort of thing)

some people say it depends on your accountant!!!! I spoke to my accountant and he says it is fine as long as i do more locum in different places ?!

Different stores for same group will count as ONE employer. Must be completely different companies.

To a certain extent, a single long-term position could still be locuming... it would be helpful to build up a history of working for other companies before starting the longterm job; then be aware of what does and doesn't qualify as self-employed while in the longtermer... the PDA have help with that. But so long as you stay clear of "manager" roles and stick to "pharmacist" then the length of the service is much harder for HMRC to argue with as there's no set time before you can (or must) be considered "employed".
