    bit of a dilemma.

    hi,
dont know if this should be in the moans and groans section but I finished my pre-reg year and passed the exam last october. Due to delays I'm only registered now since mid jan. I remember my boss literally shaking hands with me saying how if i promised to stay with him he would have me on as a pharmacist in his place. I rang there the last day to say i was on the register and he says hes doing most of the work now there and theres no need for me except untill he goes on hols et cetera. now i have to spend another two plus weeks getting these murs and insurance sorted before i can even start handing out cvs as a locum.
its kinda sickening after putting in 60+ hours a week as a pre reg and im not exaggerating...thinking it would count for something in the end!
anyway, my question....how does one in my situation get locum work in london? agencies, cv's, is it better presenting yourself in the pharmacy asking if they need locums?
    Any help would be appreciated.

This type of thing is happening far too often, and it angers me greatly. You have given this man's business massive input over the last year..60+ hours per week you say. I can guarantee he now has another pre-reg on his books who he is about to use in exactly the same way as he has used you. Ridiculously, he still has the audacity to attempt to drag you back into his sweat-shop to cover his holidays! You can forget that for a start.
You are now qualified..drop this guy and move on. If you are sure you want to locum, get your CV out to every agency you can find, as soon as possible. Get business cards printed and every time you pass a pharmacy, drop one in.
You have to be mobile, buy a car. If not make sure you have ample public transport close to hand within London.
Keep your mobile phone switched on and hope for the best.

    Best of luck,

    Fleeg.

Unfortunately, you are living in the most pharmaceutically saturated markets in the country being in London, as well as one of the most expensive places on the planet. So if you still want to be a pharmacist, get a relief job. If you want to Locum (which will soon die a painful and slow death being a saturated part of the profession), then relocate, head South West or North East (avoiding Birmingham, Leicester and the whole of Scotland)

Or apply to work in one of the many vacancies currently being advertised.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Bosses that use and abuse staff in such a way and make promises they know they won't keep are everywhere. They don't care that you've worked so hard and put in so much. I'm currently trying to get something as simple as a reference from my ex manager and he won't even do that for me despite what i've done at work. I'm about to lose an amazing job as I can't get this reference......these people simply do not care.....

Reference? Get a colleague elsewhere to write you one.

Or make one up as everyone does, get a friend to do it

    Dizzy..

There's no need for you to lose the job offer. Use your lack of reference as one of the reasons why you are applying for the new job. Your new employer has to understand. Be suspicious if he doesn't.

    Zakkaz..

You might be unpleasantly surprised to find out how easy it is to spot a self-written reference...believe me..I've seen some hilarious ones. Telephone numbers and email addresses are followed up by employers as a matter of course.

How about uni lecturer? Fellow locums you know or have worked with as second pharmacists? A technician? Heck, a dispenser or counter staff? Write one up yourself, send them a copy to sign off, bingo bango

    Re: bit of a dilemma.

I think Dizzy's potential employer seeks professional references from a Superintendent or managing pharmacist, to contain particular information regarding supervision and work ethic in a previous long-term employment.
University lecturers, locums, technicians, dispensers, counter staff, yourself and 'bingo bangos' do not fall into that category.

    Nice try though

In that case, nice little letter or phonecall to SD's office to get their pathetic employee to pull their finger out of their plug hole and get a reference drafted and sent STAT, wouldn't go amiss
