When your name and number is on the register and not a day before.
i never recommend any one locums unless they have experience first. i found that when you are confident with all the nhs stuff, the script stuff (doses, interactions indications etc) and you know it well you can concentrate on all the various SOP's and local variations of them. this allows you to fit in seamlessly. this makes your working day safer for both patients and you. when i am asked this question i usually reply by suggesting they do relief for six months or so. you will be surprised the variation in branches, even for the same company.
I started locuming straigh after pre-reg but I never went to work in any shop without first going in for a couple of hrs to learn the system. I also made sure that in my first few weeks, I avoided script factories.
My absolute first locum was for an evening with the proprietor present as he wanted to do his books. after that, no problems. In those days the locum was a 'locum manager'. I hired staff, cashed up everyday. Saw the reps and placed orders. Locked up and, if there for a week or so which was usual in those days, opened up in the morning.

That's how I view the job as well.
Except can't cash up or hold keys as it can be used to signify employee.
It might be an age/experience thing but I've no hesitation in giving instructions to staff.
But just ask them to do it, and check its been done. How they actually do it is down to them.
I'm known for saying "Counter Please" if a customer is waiting and the staff are doing other things.

Yes you could but i would recommend getting between 3-6 months experience in a fixed location or as a relief beforehand if possible, i can understand that this may be difficult as my own pre-reg didn't get a job as a relief with the company i was working for this year.
