Red face Starting off as a locum

Im newly qualified and have started to work as a locum but so far its been very difficult to get regular work in the birmingham area..i'm finding it difficult to travel outside of this area as it gets too tiring but finding regular work within b'ham is so difficult. I am wondering if ive made the wrong decision now =( Does anyone know of any good agencies..ive registered with the majority mentioned in the PJ.

Also, does anyone have any advice to do with tax issues if you are a locum..how does it all work..when would it be best to get an accountant??

    Any replies will be appreciated!

Hi Newly Qualified! PM me if you want re: agency. Get an accountant now! - make sure you have contacted the inland revenue within three month of you starting your locum work to register as self employed. PM me with your email address because the replies can sometimes be long

Birmingham has a surplus of pharmacists due to ethnic reasons, as does North London and other areas where high immigrant population, Same was true of East London and Manchester 50 years ago with a different ethnic population due to immigration from Russia in 1890s. Pharmacy/medicine/law very popular choices for second generation immigrants as jobs do not depend on the 'old boy' network.

An accountant advertises on this forum and is highly praised.

Yes i understand that. Birmingham is highly saturated with pharmacists...but does that mean I will have to travel for all of my locuming life..This depresses me a great deal. I feel as if i've totally made the wrong career choice! Any advice...

You could 'get on your bike'. I deliberately moved to East Anglia as listed in a PJ survey as having shortage of pharmacists.

    Hi,

I did few locums over the last few months in addition to my permanent job. I haven't informed the Inland Revenue yet as one of my friends told me not to until they send me their forms to fill in!! What would happen if I don't contact them soon please?
    Thanks.

Basically the more money you earn as a locum, the more tax you will owe from a self-employed basis.. If you allow it to continue for a long period, you will also owe penalties for unpaid tax on top of that. Further, you probably will not have kept receipts that you could have claimed against the tax they tell you that you owe. You contact revenue upon startup of business...they don't contact you. Unless of course you want to try to get away with it, like your 'friend'. Do so at your own peril!

    Fleeg.
