    Ramroum,

If you don't do it, then you are comiting a criminal offence.. simple as. The Inland revenue will find out from the companies you work for.. eventually - then you will have an indepth tax investigation, HMRC will kindly knock on your door, search your home, seize all your computers and possibly arrest you depending on the level of dishonesty.

need I say more! You Can't wait for them to send it to you if they don't "know" you are working on the sly!... the first you will know is a sharp letter or a knock on the door! Also, as its dishonesty, and an arrestable offence, its reportable to rpsgb!

that is worst case scenario, and depends on the mood of the tax inspector! - more likely you will be fined heavily and will be on the hmrc scanner for years to follow!

Re: Starting off as a locum

This happened to me when I was still a student at SOP. Had taken PhC after two tears and was able to do locums (in those days £3/day). Eventually I got a stiff letter from the tax man and had to pay up £120 which was a large sum in those days. Whoever you work for will be claiming your cost against their own tax, and that is how the tax man finds out. There is a loophole for 'casual labour'. Used to be £30/week, not sure what figure is now.

Jesus Christ!! You scared me to death with your replies.
Honestly, I wasn't aware that it's considered as dishonesty.
What shall I do next??? What would it happen if I send them a letter with a list of my locums (although few occasional ones) which I started doing about 10 months ago? Will they fine me??

spk to an accountant asap.....depends how many locums u done? get advice first... but my bet is that if you are upfront, and spk to them first, then they may waive any fine. All in all they are not fools - ie not everyne goes upto the taxman willingly offering to pay tax - therefore as long as you get advice & act quickly you should have no problems

Don't panic. At the end of the tax form is a section saying 'other income'.
Just fill in those locums and all will be well.

The problem is that I haven't received any tax form yet from the Inland R.
(I am an NHS employee mainly and I only locum occasionally so I can't consider myself as self employed). When do people usually receive their tax forms?

Not now routinely sent unless you declare a change in circumstances.
You need advice from the acct advertising on this forum.
