    Late Night Rate

For the first time in my career, I am going to be working an evening shift in a 100 hour pharmacy (6-10pm). What is the going rate?? Would I be justified in charging more after 7pm? (or is it more after 6pm, 8pm or what?). If so, how much more; time-and-a-half or double time??
PS It is in Outer London

normally its a couple of quid more per hour for after 6pm - at least that's what the supermarkets normally pay for late shifts.

All the people I work for pay Saturday rate after 7pm and before 7am.

Is working late shifts busier than working during the day?

Used to work in a place that closed at 2200.
Most of time got a surge at 2145.

I reckon there's always a surge in the last 10 - 15 mins leading up to any event that keeps you open or delays something you had planned to do at a certain time in community pharmacy.

I'm going to call it "Pharmanaut's Maxim".

If you have any addicts, they always seem to come in 5 mins before closing.
(best time for staff distraction and shop lifting). We used to open 8.30am until 8pm, and we would get them knocking on the window just after we closed. I let one in once and got reprimanded--doors are closed before any staff can leave shop floor, if no staff on floor--aladdins cave open for business. After that no one admitted after doors closed.

Probably not busier on average, but certainly more stressful. Every bum, freak and midget appears from their beds or from behind bushes with the potential to create mayhem with their demands for drugs without prescription, as they are fully aware surgeries are closed, and that you are flying by the seat of your pants.

    Can be good fun though!

    Re: Late Night Rate

Way back in the 50s, I did three weeks night shift at BTC Aldgate.
The characters who came in at 2am were very interesting. One bought a Benzedrine inhaler. Dropped it on the floor, stamped on it to crack it open and tore off a strip of the paper impregnated with amphetamine. Calmly swallowed it and went on his way. We also sold Methadrine inhalers which contained methylamphetamine (crystal meth).

Dexedrine was not CD in those days and was widely prescribed as appetite suppressant.

Main problem for me with night work was that it was from 8pm until 8am of which you were on duty for 8 hours. Sometimes it was a split shift of 8pm until midnight, then try to get 4 hours sleep, back on counter 4am -8am when day staff came in.

3 weeks was enough for me.
