Question Is it worth becoming a locum???

Hi I am a pharmacist manager working in a multichain comp for 5 years but now I think I need a change, I am sick of managing staff and working under targets pressure esp MURs. I am on a good salary, but still thinking about the change of being a locum. To you all locums out there is it worth becoming a full time locum? whats the work like? is it now possible to get locum work every day or at least 5 days a week? or do you think it is going to be a stupid decision. I live in s yorkshire.

Being a good locum can be just as stressful (or sometimes more so) than being a manager.... but they are different stresses. But after a while, you'll be mostly going to places you know and like so in the mid to long term, more enjoyable in my eyes.

You may even find yourself where I am headed now - a relief for a (very) small chain - all the perks of regular work etc but very little managment rubbish

It's a stupid idea - but don't let that stop you.

    Locumming will get tougher.

Boots Allaince merging has resulted in a lot of pharmacists who had "office" jobs being sent into dispensaries to work again. The upcoming recession will, by next holiday season be impacting on contractors who will probably respond by taking less time off.

If you build a good reputation you may build up a good 5 day "niche" but it seems to me you need a change of scenery so look for opportunities with other companies.

    South Yorkshire?

Mrs Pharmanaut works for a smaller chain that is always looking out for good pharmacists.
They also have 'old fashioned staff' who look after you.
For example, someone will turn up out of their normal roster because one of their colleagues felt ill and arranged sick cover themselves.

PM me if you need details.
Where am I?; In the Pharmacy.
Who are you?; The new Number 2.
Who is number 1?; You are number 6.
    What do you want?;..................

Thanks for the offer but I'm trying to work LESS. But it's not easy to say no to someone who pays a Christmas bonus and tries to pay my registration fees.

    Doesn't that happen everywhere?
