    Extemp question, ointments

It's that time of the week again - Extemp formulation class preparation!

One of the formulations we're to make is 'Emulsifying Ointment containing Dithranol and Zinc Oxide'.

I'm having a bit of trouble finding what indication this ointment would be used for - is there a Licenced OTC name that might be used to find info in the OTC directory? If not, can someone perhaps give me any other ideas of references to try and find more info?

    Thanks in advance!

Incorporation of Dithranol needs care. it is important that particle size as small as possible. Large particles can cause intense irritation.
Dithrocream swept the market when introduced as finely milled and micronized.

Thanks very much for the answers. Hopefully things should go well enough, ointments don't seem that bad!

Try Martindale 28. it should be your first port of call for dispensing classes. For a bit of a laugh look up Cetostearyl Alcohol whilst you have the book in your possession

Dithranol is a treatment for chronic plaque psoriasis. It is effective but rather irritant. Since the likes of Dovonex, it is no longer widely used.

Used to use a spot of liquid paraffin to make sure the dithranol was dispersed finely before triturating it into the rest of the ointment mass.
Gloves, mask and a heated ointment slab - last time I made it in the late 20th Century.
