    want to get into dispensary

Hello people, can any one tell me the best way to get into dispensary i've been reading the forums and checking out of other sites and i think this will suit me as a career. If i was to do a course will i have to find a placement myself or is all that done for me. I was made redundant last year and have found myself working in a hospital as a porter so feel as if i've got a foot in the door, what curse of action would i need to do to get myself on a course and in work.

    Hi Lennon

There are a few ways you could start a career in pharmacy and dispensing.

As a starting point for somebody completely new to pharmacy, it may be beneficial to look at Buttercups introductory course entitled 'So you want to work in Pharmacy?’ This course serves as an entry point as to what pharmacy is, what it is about and how to get involved, along with who is who in the pharmacy and what each job entails.

Another route you could take is to undertake the knowledge from the Dispensing Assistants Course. Once this is complete you could seek a voluntary placement of 2-4 hours per week in a pharmacy in order to top up to Level 2 and complete the workbooks from the Dispensing Assistants Course (Level 2 Equivalent). This would give you the qualification required to work as a dispenser and thus a route in to pharmacy.

If you would like to discuss your options further please call or email Buttercups on 0115 9374936 or training@buttercups.co.uk

I'm not being mean but whilst I cannot see that having been a hospital porter would count against you in your quest, I don't see how it can count for you as opposed to any other occupation.

True. We've had people who work at Unichem assembling orders thinking that this somehow qualifies them for dispensary work which it doesn't. On a more positive note OP, have you asked at the hospital pharmacy if they have any assistant jobs going?
