    Nurses formulary??

Independent nurse prescribers are allowed to prescribe any licensed medication for any medical condition including some controlled drugs as stated in the BNF. Now it also lists a formulary which is "limited", which has left me somewhat confused. Is this nurses formulary for supplementary prescribers or independent??? Any clarification would be appreciated.

    thanks

    Re: Nurses formulary??

Three types of nurse prescribers: Independent nurse prescribers can prescribe any medicine (but only some controlled drugs) within their expertise. The NPF in the Drug Tariff doesn't apply to them. It does apply to community practitioner nurse prescribers who are recommended to prescribe generically but can prescribe by brand (so long as the equivalent is not blacklisted in the DT). Nurse supplementary prescribers are similar to pharmacist supp. prescribers (i.e prescribing in co-ordination with a clinical management plan).
