Guys need some help ! would really really appreciate it alot !

We were asked a question by our professor which is confusing to me and he told us to get back to him whenever we felt we understood the question and got the answer.

He basically asked us that there is product X which has 30mg of elemental zinc per serving. Or is it 30mg of zinc gluconate and not really labeled right calling it 200% DV since it's only 5mg of zinc?

If so, why does product X has such a high amount of zinc per serving? Add up multiple servings per day, a multi, and ZMA type of supplements to a tune of in excess of 100-150 mg/d without a directive to limit zinc intake for those who don't know better and there is a potential issue that it creates with copper status which is well established. There is no copper in sight in the product. But there are other divalent cations in there like Ca2+, there can be antagonism and zinc absorption reduction which is another matter.

Would this combo be negative ?; because in essence reduced superoxide dismuatase which can in turn increase membrane lipid peroxidation and decrease RBC survival time among other things, reduced cytochrome c and serum ceruloplasmin which also affect iron transport and use, reduced HDL, reduced mononuclear and polymorphonuclear white blood cells and platelets, etc... i.e. not exactly healthy.

Help me out here folks ! and also are there any other Pharmacy websites which are for discussions for topics of relevance ?

I think 99.9% of people on here have absolutely no idea after reading your post. Zinc is usually prescribed if there's a known deficiency and in higher doses for maintenance therapy of Wilson's disease (where copper accumulates in tissues). Can't think of any other medical uses of zinc.

I'm sorry I haven't done a nutrition or dietetics degree. I have tried to put a medical/pharmaceutical slant relating to your question "Why does product x have a high amount of zinc per serving". To answer this you need to start by considering what the medical usefelness is of giving someone such doses of zinc. I presume you are doing a medical/pharmaceutical course.

Hopefully these give you some help:

    # Hunt JR, Beiseigel JM. Dietary calcium does not exacerbate phytate inhibition of zinc absorption by women from conventional diets. Am J Clin Nutr 2009; 89(3): 839–843. (PubMed)

    # Feillet-Coudray C, Meunier N, Rambeau M et al. Long-term moderate zinc supplementation increases exchangeable zinc pool masses in late-middle-aged men: the Zenith Study. Am J Clin Nutr 2005; 82(1): 103–110. (PubMed)

    # Hininger-Favier I, Andriollo-Sanchez M, Arnaud J et al. Age- and sex-dependent effects of long-term zinc supplementation on essential trace element status and lipid metabolism in European subjects: the Zenith Study. Br J Nutr 2007; 97(3): 569–578. (PubMed)

    # Intorre F, Polito A, Andriollo-Sanchez M et al. Effect of zinc supplementation on vitamin status of middle-aged and older European adults: the ZENITH study. Eur J Clin Nutr 2008; 62(10): 1215–1223. (PubMed)

    To summarise,

Zinc supplementation (15 or 30 mg daily for 6 months) significantly increased the size of the exchangeable zinc pool and serum zinc levels and urinary zinc excretion, but did not significantly modify erythrocyte zinc levels or erythrocyte copper, zinc superoxide dismutase activity.

Bioavailability of zinc from supplements varies and depends on the form of the zinc. There is evidence that absorption of zinc from "zinc" "gluconate" is higher than from zinc oxide, and that organic yeast salts26 and zinc bis-glycinate are more biologically available than "zinc" "gluconate".

Also the zinc content in zinc gluconate is thought to be about 130mg/g.

Read this dude...could just solve your problem.

Head-louse infestation or head lice (also referred to colloquially in British, Irish, Australian and New Zealand English as nits) is a human medical condition caused by the colonization of the hair and skin by the parasitic insect Pediculus humanus capitis—the head louse. Typically, only the head or scalp of the host is infested, although the disease can occur in other hairy parts of the body, like leg hairs. Head lice feed on human blood (hematophagy), and itching from louse bites is a common symptom of this condition.[1] Treatment typically includes application of topical insecticides such as a pyrethrin or permethrin, although a variety of folk remedies are also common.[2]
Lice infestation in general is known as pediculosis, and occurs in many mammalian and bird species.[3][4] The term pediculosis capitis, or simply "pediculosis", is sometimes used to refer to the specific human pediculosis due to P. humanus capitis (i.e., head-louse infestation). Humans are hosts for two other lice as well—the body louse and the crab louse.
Head-louse infestation is widely endemic, especially in children. It is a cause of some concern in public health, although, unlike human body lice, head lice are not carriers of other infectious diseases.

When teaching and talking about % of element present, I used to use Calcium Carbonate as an example.
    Eg: Ca=40, C=12, O=16 so CaCO3 adds very neatly to 100.

RDA of Zinc is 15mg - any more could cause more problems than it solves.

No chance, I suppose, that your professor could have been talking about oysters?
