Re: Metabolism

Consider each of the following enzyme-catalysed reactions which commonly take place in cells.
i. protein synthesis
ii. aerobic respiration of glucose
iii. digestion of starch in the gut
iv. replication of DNA
v. formation of a triglyceride in adipose tissue.

For each of the above EXPLAIN why the reaction is an example of anabolism or catabolism.


For some reason the lecturer has given us this assignment without teaching us the topic.

First you need to understand what anabolism and catabolism are, i.e synthesising molecules from small units, or breaking large molecules down to their individual units. So protein SYNTHESIS is an example of an... anabolic reaction (big clue here ). Any decent biochemistry book will go into the reactions in more detail.

thanks, i've noted which reaction is an example of, its explaining it in more detail im having problems with, all the biology books i have don't explain catab/anab but like you say, maybe i need a biochemistry book instead.

Remember google is your friend, could start with Oxford dictionary to get basic meaning.
I have just looked it up and understand, why can't you?

I understand what anabolism and catabolism is, no need for sarcasm! This is a student forum where i assume students can ask for help! I just wanted a little help applying the meaning to the reactions, jeeeeez

I can only suggest you approach your lecturer and ask him/her why they haven't covered this subject with the students before the assignment was set. It does appear strange. I assume you attended all the lectures...

Perhaps the lecturer set the topic to test the mettle of the students.
