    folic acid antagonists

what would the effect be of taking a folic acid antagonist and folic acid? say for example I have an epileptic mother on AEDs ,what action is taken? and what would you recommend, not just for the epileptic mother but for anyone taking folic acid antagonists?
Also I read that those who have already had a child which suffers a neural tube defect then the recommended dose of folic acid is 4-5 mg yet other literature is telling me it is dangerous to take over 1 mg as it complicates the ability to determine vit b 12 defiency. Both seem credible sources?!? your expert opinions??
    thank you

Well they clearly do use 5mg doses of folic acid so I would say that the "dangerous" equates to "not suitable for OTC sale - GP must be involved." Just an opinion!

There used to be a worry that taking B12/folic acid could mask the symptoms of pernicious anaemia. No one seems to worry these days.
