Question Help In Suitable Access Course

    Hi Everyone,

Hoping you guys can help me. After years of trying to find what it is that i want to do in life ive found pharmacy. Im 21, and recently got in contact with portsmouth uni to find out what i needed to do to get into pharmacy with only 4 gcse's and a level 2 vocational course in accounting. They told me i needed to do an access course in applied sciences. ive found one suitable course in lambeth college which the majority of the uni's have told me is acceptable as an entry requirment as well as my previous grades and experience.

My problem now is finding another similar course as a back up just in case i dont get into lambeth college. I generally just assumed i could get into lambeth until my dad started making me paranoid with a whole load of what ifs..

If anyone has any idea or if you have done an access course in pharmacy or applied sciences please could you tell me which college and the name of the course as well as the uni you went on to do your degree in pharmacy at.

    Thanks so much
    Mandi x

Well I dont want to discourage you but the pharmacy profession is not really the best choice. Although there are numerous benefits job secuirity, flexibility and good pay the down sides seem to outweigh the rest. I try not to be negative about it, but the work load for pharmacists at the moment is increasing exponentially with a disproportionate increase in pay, the professional body has no proper representation and the profession itself really amounts to a glorified shop keeper.

But honestly if thats what you have your heart set on good luck! If you do not get into pharmacy first time you could look out for clearing places (I have seen clearing places for SOP in London). If this does not work you could always try something like chemical engineering, employers are screaming out for these at the moment.

Anyway good luck in what ever path you take!

I did chemical engineering in my final year. I had hoped to have a career in basic pharma production. However, my first few interviews made it clear that pharmacists were not wanted, the wanted engineers with some biological lnowledge. I abandoned the idea and went into marketing. The experience did come in useful when I found myself advising on margarine manufacture in St Kitts and babyfood production in Tanzania.

hi, i just completed the access applied sciences (Pharmacy) course this year at lambeth college and am now heading off to Medway School of Pharmacy. I wasn't 100% sure about pharmacy, but as the year went by and i learned more and more about pharmacy, i started loving it more and more (thanks to Professor Giles who is the best teacher/lecturer i have known to date) and now i am a 100% sure about going into this field. Do everything you can to get into Lambeth College, you won't regret it!

    sorry about the late reply.

They're not very selective at all...so as long as you have your GCSE in maths/english at C or above you'll be accepted. If however you don't have those GCSEs, they'll make you do a short on the spot mini-test to see if your english is up to an ok-standard. Aside from that, just make sure you're one of the 1st few people to enrol as i believe spaces are more limited than ever this year.
