Where am I?; In the Pharmacy.
Who are you?; The new Number 2.
Who is number 1?; You are number 6.
What do you want?;..................
its all about the benjamins
yep, you are spot on - we were treated like absolute dirt.
im currently doing my placement in a small town, and have never felt so bullied, or used and taken advantage of in my life.
boots need to rethink the way they run things, they wonder why as soon as every one has done a pre reg year with them that they run a mile, or they've basically scared people from doing a 9-6 job and so go into locum work.

Keep it clean because I'll be watching !
Apprenticed 1952-54. Received £100 for first year and £250 for second (for the year not the month!)
However, in the very old days it was expected that a premium had to be paid for 'training' and money had to be paid up front. The apprentice was expected to live in and just received his keep. Often expected to sleep under the counter.
You have never had it so good!.

i worked in a pharmacy where the managers were hi-school drop outs who got their thrills from being able to boss the hell out of someone who actually managed to get more than 2 gcse's. the pharmacists who work there know its how they are treated and accept it as just a standard part of the work place. what a load of bull. i hate the fact that all the intelligent, hardworking , qualified people in all jobs have to tiptoe around the feelings of a few illiterate people.

When you are on the register (Whichever one that is, RPSGB or GPhC)
Go for the best employment contract with the most benefits and highest salary when they are trying to recruit you. This is the one chance you will get to dictate your terms. Make the most of it.
Then remember pharmanauts maxim "Get in there, get the job done, go home".
Don't like it : move on!
Remember; don't get angry with them, most of the time, it isn't worth it.

I've just finished a summer placement with Boots and, this may sound totally unbelievable...but I LOVED it. No joke. My pharmacist was really wonderful, kept thinking up things that he thought I might want to know and finding things that he thought were interesting...my colleagues were great, and my manager was lovely. I was never used as an extra member of staff, apart from Friday, when we had deaths/illnesses/holidays all at the same time.
I think regardless of which company you do your placement with, your tutor/buddy/pharmacist is the person who makes or breaks it for you. If they want you to have a interesting time and learn something, then they will do. If they don't...then you're kinda screwed. We were told on induction day that if we felt that we were being used as cheap labour, then we should complain about it. Obviously I didn't have to, but I know someone who did, and the situation changed (albeit not dramatically).
Although I know Boots don't treat their pharmacists well...I think you can get away with a lot more on the placement in terms of "demanding" what you will and won't do, and what you want to be doing. After all, it's only eight weeks, and you've got nothing to lose.
