Re: Need some help on these chem calculations

    Definition of Aligation
Al`li*ga"tion (&?, n. [L. alligatio.] 1. The act of tying together or attaching by some bond, or the state of being attached. [R.]

    2. (Arith.) A rule relating to the solution of questions concerning the compounding or mixing of different ingredients, or ingredients of different qualities or values.

&fist; The rule is named from the method of connecting together the terms by certain ligature-like signs. Alligation is of two kinds, medial and alternate; medial teaching the method of finding the price or quality of a mixture of several simple ingredients whose prices and qualities are known; alternate, teaching the amount of each of several simple ingredients whose prices or qualities are known, which will be required to make a mixture of given price or quality.

    - Webster's Unabridged Dictionary (1913)

Not much help is it. From what I can remember:

Two ingredients to be mixed A is 10g and B is 100g.

Take approximately 10g of B and add to A. fairly easy to mix two quantities of equal size.

Then add 20g approx of B to the mixed 10gA + 10g B, and mix,
    Next 40g and so on.

This method particularly applicable to levigation where you use a spatual to mix on a slab. Used it a lot in ointments.

Off the top of my head

    a. Paper based
BNF the bible - use it every day
    Childrens BNF
Drug Tarif - to see if we get paid
Martindale - Good for trying to identify foreign medicines
PCT guidelines - red - amber green - shared care and who is responsible for monitoring
DTB, MeRec - if you are trying to influence prescribing

    b. Telephone
Drug Information Departments at local hospitals (good for doing internet searches on unlicenced herbals)
NPA information - Finds a way of allowing you to what you want to do
RPSGB library/information Finds a way of forbidding you to do what you really don't want to do.
PPA - to make sure that you'll be paid

    c. Online (internet)
Cochrane - if it's there it's the cutting edge of accumulated evidence
NPCi - A shiny easier to understand version (includes stuff like eMeRec)
Pubmed - If you are going to try to monitor research that Cochrane hasn't done recently or want to get back to the papers cited in other "evidence".

    d. Networking - getting to know who to ask - an NPC trainer, CPPE tutor, PCT pixies, local GP's, district nurses ( great when patients discharged from hospital with non-prescribable dressings and a script for some more - they'll probably have something suitable on their shelves), pharmacist at local hospital (for those miswritten/wrongly transcribed hospital scripts e.g amiodarone 200mg tds mitte 84), patients and their experiences of medicines (ADR reporting)

Now just (hehe) put these sorts of ideas into an essay

2.Pharmacists in any branch of the profession must work within an ethical and legal framework. Discuss this ethical and legal framework giving specific examples of the laws applicable to pharmacy. (25)
The RPSGB publishes a very boring book pretending to be about ethics (MEP)
search the RPSGB site and enjoy.
Also see the stat comm reports in the PJ (search for PJ online and then stat comm appears in most issues under the heading Society.)
This question bores me silly so I'll leave it to someone else.

    Basic maths. In proportion 3;2;1.

    Therefore % are 50%,33%,17%

    Therefore quantities for 100ml are 50ml, 33ml and 17ml.

    Next?

sorry I keep asking these questions but there is no mark scheme and I am having to work backwards. I don't get why they don't release the mark schemes, its very frustrating

It was best described in an old Monty Python sketch about a parrot.

Absolute crap! Instead of just writing about the usual stuff you'll find on the Society's website why don't you try a rather more critical approach. Search the Clarke inquiry responses for the perceived role of the Society (The Clarke Inquiry). Have a look under individual responses from some of the more prominent members of our profession (Ivan Stockley; Gordon Applebe, if I remember correctly). Good luck!
