To be honest whatever you can do in a pharmacy during the day, you would do on an evening or at the weekend. There would often be stock that needed putting away as the day staff had been too busy to finish or stock checks to make sure that we had everything we needed for the next day. We had two deliveries a day so there was always things needing to be done for that.

We were the only pharmacy open outside of normal shop hours so we got patients from the out of hours care centre. That should be less now the GP has later opening hours in their own pharmacy. Sundays were often our busiest day, which is surprising. We began with one pharmacist and one dispenser and ended up with one pharmacist and two dispensers all day! And even then it could get quite hectic and we would have to bring in a third dispenser.

On an evening you are likely to get the methadone people coming in, but none of ours were any bother, apart from one who used to shoplift every time he came in the shop! He got told to pack it in or he could get his methadone elsewhere. A lot of people like to come in outside of office hours for various things such as MURs simply because they are at work during the day.

To be honest I would always prefer working in a supermarket if I'm working late, firstly because there are always loads of people around and secondly, because all your needs are there. You can grab a drink and a sandwich if you're hungry. There's always someone to talk to whether its a customer or other pharmacy worker or someone on the shop floor. You're not standing in a shop by yourself or with just one other person worried every time someone comes in. It can be a good place to work.

    Just another thing,
You'll need an NHS smartcard for EPS release-2. If EPS-1 is still running you SHOULD have a premises card, but you have to have your own for Release-2. If you've not seen it working at all, ask around. Quite a few firms are waking up to the fact that it will be necessary, and making sure their pharmacies are ready. Rowlands, Co-op and Lloyds around here, but Asda and Sainsbury's are catching up, and even Boots are considering it!!
