I totally agree with you about lack of " engaging management" (Good choice of word!) - I remember working for a multiple when I had hired my own choice of staff after getting rid of poor performers. By the end of the year the scripts had increased by 25%, we had a much happier ship and we'd worked very hard - me on training and the newbies to conform to my exacting standards! Then at xmas a memo was circulated to say that owing to the poor performance of certain branches, nobody was to receive an xmas bonus. Now I realise that a bonus is not a right, but it seemed ironic to me that the previous incompetent staff whom I had sacked (with their blessing) had received a bonus, so I spoke to HO. Yes they agreed that my branch was one of the best improvements they'd EVER SEEN and they thought my new staff were "very much above average" yet said that they couldn't give just my branch a bonus because they had to treat everybody the same. I stood my ground and stated that I was not bothered about a bonus for myself but my new enthusiastic and brilliant staff deserved no less. Here's how the conversation went :
me "but why do you have to treat everybody the same, when clearly everybody isn't the same?"
HO " because that's the company policy."
me " well perhaps an exception could me made in this case"
HO " No because if other branches found out, we'd have a riot on our hands."
me " Oh you mean the others who are poorly performing? Well of course |I can guarantee my staff won't tell if they get a bonus , but have you thought that perhaps the underperforming branches should be aware that other people may get a bonus but not them?"
HO "how do you work that out? tell us then, what you'd say to Mary as to why she hadn't got a bonus , but Jane had."
me "well that's easy. I'd say, 'Mary you haven't got a bonus like Jane has, because you've not worked as well - you've had numerous days off sick/ been frequently late/punched the locum - whatever. If you learn to address these issues then you'll maybe get a bonus next time."
HO " We take your point but we can't do that. It's company policy to treat everybody the same."
GRRRRRR!!!! Needless to say this was the last time I worked for a multiple, those superb staff have all now left as there was no incentive for them to work hard in a climate which perpetuates mediocrity. All they wanted was a gesture of appreciation. Surveys have often showed staff rate "to be valued " higher than salary.
ps JZD4RMA you could always brush up on your french conditional subjunctives and come over to be a "remplacement" (locum) for me - you'd certainly be appreciated, the sun would shine and the wine is 70p a litre .....!!!! Nice talkin' to ya.
