    Surgery League of Friends

My own GP's surgery (this is nothing to do with work as I live in a town about 8 miles from where I work) has an active League of Friends. I was approached by a representative of this organisation asking for a donation as they were raising money for some equipment for the surgery. I asked whether if this equipment was essential and if so why didn't the surgery buy it for themselves and as they were a small business claim capital allowance on it and write it off against tax over a period of a few years.

Reasonable enough you might think? Well apparently I might be speaking Klingon as far as this chap was concerned. He was an "enthusiast" type of patient, you know the type I'm sure and couldn't or wouldn't understand what I was on about. He thought the doctors were doing "a great job" ( great is debatable) and thought everyone should support them. I had another go, saying that the local butcher did a great job and how about having a whip-round to buy him a new till. That one went straight over his head needless to say.

I do wonder what goes on in the mind of these people

Great scam. get the pts to pay for new piece of equipment and also claim for it at same time.

It demonstrates precisely the reason why General Practice has such a privileged position in communities; the vast majority of people don't realise that they are small businesses and not part of the NHS.

Just politely say that as we are part of the NHS we are unable to donate.
If you are a chain suggest he writes to head-office... give them something to do to take their minds off the critical christmas barometer period.
Wouldn't burst his bubble - enthusiasm is valuable and it might be giving this chap a purpose in life.
