    competitive rate of pay?

I am sick of job adverts stating "competitive rate of pay" and not giving an amount or even a range of potential salaries.

I have spent time reading through their adverts, decoding the clues to find out about the real working conditions in their RX and MUR sweatshops, errr pharmacies, and they can't be bothered to give me even a glimpse of the only reason I go to work - the MONEY!

May be this is to stop dollar hunters like me from applying, but really, are there hoards of pharmacists out there who actually like wearing themselves down under targets for xy&z, molly coddeling blue script patients, being a referee between bitchy staff, etc for bottom dollar pay? If it were a truely great place to work, or not, AND it paid a half decent salary, I would expect them to be maximizing their expensive adverts by including this important piece of fiscal information.

So what actully is a competitve rate of pay, and, what working conditions will it compensate you for?

A competitive rate is the lowest rate they can get away with.

Don't bother. Be a locum. The pay, conditions and stress-level are infinitely better, and you can sleep at night.

    I should have guessed!

I was told about a good job: 45h/w £40K pa with targets of 10 MUR pw and monthly Rx target of +6500. Max of 20 MDS pw, and push MAS, stop smoking scheme and free EHC. No breaks, but meals and drinks allowed while working a 9 hour day.
I know this is a lot of money, but a lot of stress too. I think this is a "competitive" wage but not a good one.

I don't advertise what I pay my pharmacists when I look for staff. A lot depends on what support a new employee may require and how much resource I have to commit. Also the aspirations of an applicant and what they expect is important.

Apply, you may be surprised at what reception you get.

How generous to allow the odd sip of coffee

It is of course illegal not to provide for proper breaks.

You also have a recepticle to which a broom can be inserted, you could sweep the floor at the same time.

A friend has just started working as a junior graphics designer having finished her degree. I nearly fell over when I found out that contract designers hired by the company charge £50.00 an hour! Glad I've retired as I would consider re-training! Now that is what I call a "competitive wage" with no chance of killing someone either.

The highest starting salary of a graduate leaving Manchester University last year was with Aldi, as a manager. It paid £44k plus a decent Audi. Prospects, assuming you make the grade, are outstanding.
