Where am I?; In the Pharmacy.
Who are you?; The new Number 2.
Who is number 1?; You are number 6.
What do you want?;..................
There's rumours of one opening near to me (apparently land has been acquired by the chain, on a main road just outside of town), potentially wiping business from a plethora of local independents and multiples. Who knows. Maybe the concept could lead to its own demise.
This is what Pharmacy has been reduced to in Britain now. Let's not kid ourselves that we're "Healthcare Professionals" of any sort.
I've always felt that there's been a lot of kidding ourselves on in pharmacy. Go to any pharmacy careers day and everyone will be talking about counselling and advising patients, helping folk take their medication and providing clinical services. Noone ever mentions plus paks, sticking labels on to boxes and checking endless MDS trays. We like to kid on pharmacy is this important service at the heart of the community, but the way patients see us is just a shop where they get their medicines and the way doctors see the pharmacy is as a medicines storeroom where they send patients to pick up drugs. There is a lot of potential for pharmacists to help patients, but we'll never get the involvement and recognition we deserve because pharmacies are run by private companies for profit and so the customer's health comes a long way down the list after making money and doing the bare minumum not to get sued. How can eMAS consultations or MURs be done properly when one pharmacist is doing 10,000 items a month and has mad targets to reach? Any other healthcare professionals can concern themselves first with helping patients, whereas pharmacy is just "get as much money out of 9 to 6 as possible, then we can worry about patients if there's time". Maybe its just me having bad experience of particularly ruthless shops, but it just seems like we're kidding ourselves on about what we actually do.
Guys,
You allow yourselves to be de-valued, no-one else can.
How clever you are pharmanaut!
Just to prove the the fast food link. we obviously know what paper you read
Boots opens Britain's first drive-through chemist... in an old McDonald's | Mail Online
Just as I was about to rant about what an absolutely idiotic idea that is, with surely unrealistic targets and in my opinion, errors waiting to happen, I discover that I can't as it is my employer. Great.
Having said that I probably should have guessed it!
