    Eu dispensing

So I'm reading in this weeks PJ and an article about EU wide script recognition is supported, the basics of it is..."provision should be made for prescriptions issued in one member state to be recognised and dispensed in another, EU draft legislation proposes" (PJ)

So if this becomes the case, then ok fair enough, but am i right in saying that currently patients residing in UK can't get their scripts dispensed in Wales or Scotland?

Would you guys be happy to dispense a prescription that had originated from Poland?

ok, so i worded it slightly wrong, i was meant to say can english scripts get dispensed in wales or scotland and vice versa...i thought since wales don't pay prescription charges then english pople can't jump over the border to get free prescriptions......

so is there going to be a universal charge if we do have to do EU wide dispensing??

With the correct safeguards on verifying the prescriber?

Whether or not I dispensed one on face value would depend on what is was for.
That goes for any private script, and not just ones from Poland. (non-UK EU scripts treated as private scripts).

In the very early 50s, we received a few scripts from Poland, generally for anti TB meds.
We could not dispense them, but sometimes the same item would appear on a NHS script. Probably, to be sent over to Poland.

the impression i got from reading the article, was that they wouldn't be treated as private scripts, and as part of the directive, member states reimburse the costs of cross border healthcare, including dispensed medicines.

Oh Goody, cut the cost of NHS dispensing here in the UK. Send all scripts out to another EU country so they can fund.

    Re: Eu dispensing

    I've seen one EU script.

I couldn't read the name, understand the address, begin to consider verifying the Dr (assuming it was a Dr) and never heard of the medicine (although it did "read" as a medical sort of word, IYSWIM).

Happily, it was just on the side and not handed in to me or left for me to sort.

There's really very little way this can work safely in community.

    Re: Eu dispensing

i guess, they claim that medicines should be prescribed by INN (generic names). Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen....can imagine a few international phone calls trying to track the dr down lol.

Although i doubt we will be hit much due tot he fact we are an island...probably more for mainland europe and people living on borders..can't imagine a script for abx and the person travels thousands of miles to get it dispensed....may happen but not a regular occurence
