Just what are community pharmacists committed to in this day and age?

    Dear Community/Retail Pharmacist

I am a PhD student from The University of Manchester and I am looking at what role commitment plays in Community Pharmacy in Great Britain. In particular, I am focusing on understanding and characterising commitment to the profession and commitment to the employing organisation in this sector, along with its effects, if any, on job performance and various forms of job-related withdrawal behaviours. This research, I feel, is importnant due to the significant changes that community pharmacists face. Previous research in other areas have shown that commitment can be a critical factor in successfully adapting to such changes. This is of consequence for the sector, profession and the employing organisations. Despite this, comparatively little has been researched about commitment in pharmacy worldwide and even less is known about the commitment of community pharmacists in Great Britain.

Therefore, I am posting this here today to create awarness of this survey, which is now live, and the research area. If anyone would like further information please contact me by private message (email removed to protect user from spam deluge) and/or visit either http://blogs.mhs.manchester.ac.uk/pharmacommitphd/project-stage-2-survey/, www.facebook.com/pharmacommitphd or www.twitter.com/pharmacommitphd

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Yours sincerely,

    Amir

Bit of a no brainer at present time. No committment in pharmacy towards employers who show no committment to pharmacists.
Your survey designed for the infinitesimal number of independent pharmacists who are indeed committed to their businesses.

I'm mostly committed to safe (i.e. defensive) practice, in this era of short-staffing and lack of resources from the bottom to the top.
    ....just my opinion

I guess not the views he/she was hoping for, you know:

    1) Committment to providing more and more patient services.(without any more resources of course).
    2) Really useful MURs, rather than those on the easiest of patients, just to meet targets.
    3) Dedication to working for benevolent employers. (Just saw a flying pig go by)
I am sure you can think of some more for this utopian view of pharmacy.

Pharmacists are committed to their patients.
Multiples are committed to putting how many items have been dispensed this week into a spreadsheet and comparing it to last year.

This is the question that I am determined to answer, regardless of what that answer may actually be. So far survey responses are approaching 400 both by post and online.

If any community pharmacist, or anyone else, is interested in this area feel free to visit the research blog Pharmacy Commitment PhD.

Best wishes and many thanks to those whom have already taken part,

    Amir
