Hi, i have no idea if I have posted this in the correct place but hay ho! I am currently trying to finish my NVQ 3 and have been asked to do a stimulation on how to make up menthol 1% and Aqueous 100g. I have no idea where to even start for all the years I've been working in community pharmacy I've never made up anything like this!
Any help would be so appreciated.
The process is trituration and levigation. The menthol is reduced from crystals in a mortar with a very small quantity of cream.
More cream is added gradually and when no crystals or 'grittiness' to the touch. Turn out on a slab and incorporate equal quantity of cream. Keep repeating this addition until all done. A spatula is used with pressure, flat side down to ensure mixing and reduction of any remaining particles. Demonstration of shear forces.
The cheats method is to dissolve the menthol in a small quantity of IMS and simply stir in.

Thank you so much! I could not of asked for a more perfect answer! Can I be cheeky and bug you for some more info?! I also need to state the correct formula, does this mean there is 1% of menthol to each 100g of aqueous I only require 100g therefore that is my formula? Also I need to show that my calculations and quantities meets the formula's requirements! Any help would be much appreciated, many thanks Leeann
Nope, it is 1G menthol and 99G aqueous cream. If you added 100g aqueous cream then it would end up less than 1% menthol (1g in 101g, rather than 1g in 100g).
And you should use a glass mortar, "composition" (white) mortars will adsorb appreciable amounts of the menthol and everything you use it for, for months afterwards, will come out mentholated!
hi leeann is this for 1st year or 2nd year? if for 2nd year evidence in the 1st year u should have done an activity report on u can use that as evidence just attach an activity report to the case study and say this is the case stusy i did in year 1 etc, if for 1st year i would ask ur tutor to show u exactly how its done and write a detailed report for case study and then u can use it in 2nd yr
Correct David, we used to have scripts calling for menthol, camphor and thymol. Used a small glass mortar for these.
1g + 99g is correct. However, I failed a dispensing exam because I failed to allow for wastage and was unable to send quantity required. Should really make a surplus. My brain is tired this morning, someone calculate weight of menthol plus 100 gram cream to give 1%. Suspect it is 1.01g
