A script for: "Insulin glargine 100 U/ml, 5 pre-filled pens, 3 ml pen". Should it be filled with Lantus SoloStar or Lantus OptiSet?

ask the patient to see which one they use. i would normally go with the optiset BUT depends on what they are used to using. oh, and endorse accordingly.

BTW, is there any significant difference between SoloStar and OptiSet? What was the reason for Sanofi to put them both in the market?
I think that one of them only adjusts in multiples of 2 units and the other can do 1 unit doses. The patient needs to be familiar with the device or they would have to start reading instructions again before using it. I have had issues with this because the LLOYDS compass system does not appear to have a good system for indicating which product was selected last time that patient had a generically written repeat script (unless you specifically make a patient note).
Yes, with SoloStar the dose can be set in steps of 1 unit with a range 1-80 U, and with OptiSet it's 2 units and 2-40 U, respectively. I still cannot understand why they are both on the market. Which one was launched first?
I seem to remember that Optiset was out first.
According to the good word of the DM+D this stuff isn't meant to be prescribed generically on the grounds that 'patient training is required'.

Is the prescription EPS?
Of course, the prescribing system will do whatever it has been set up to do...
GP chooses Optiset or SoloStar - system switches to generic and prints this to keep up generic prescribing levels.
Generic script arrives in pharmacy. If you have no PMR to go by then its almost sure that you don't have the right one in stock....
And you can bet its saturday afternoon and the patient has just used last drop.
