Contraceptive plus other items - free of charge?

When a contraceptive is prescribed on the same prescription form as other items, does it change anything when it comes to pricing of the prescription? If there are three items, one of which is a contraceptive, does the patient have to pay two prescription charges (provided that he is not exempt)?

It might seem obvious but I want to be sure.

they still pay for the chargeable items but not the pill. pill is classed as a NC item when doing your figures and month end.

    Apart from Dianette.
Has to be marked 'for contraceptive use' or words like that.
BNF has this as secondary use.
Also don't forget to endorse manufacturer as there is now more than one for this product, and the PPA will bounce it if not endorsed.

I'd expect him to pay three charges, as the contraceptive pill would not be a contraceptive pill for a man surely?

We often get the 'boyfriend' at the counter wanting to buy EHC.
They get quite argumentative when we say we need to see their partner.

yup had that a few times. i just tell em there's lots of detailed info i need to give to the patient directly - and that i'm quite happy to sell it, just directly to the lady involved.

If I can also ask a question here. We received a script for Dianette on Thursday, issued by the out of hours GP that wasn't marked as 'for contaceptive use'. I thought they patient would have to pay for it however I did doubt myself a little bit so as it was a call back I checked with the NPA who confirmed that payment was needed. When the patient returned she wasn't very happy and we later got a call from her irate mother who apparently works in a surgery wanting to know why her daughter had to pay for contraception and how she could get a refund. I'm expecting her to come in tomorrow as we told her she'd have to contact the out of hours surgery and see if they would issue a second script, appropriately worded in which case I'd be happy to make a refund but not issue the second lot of meds. Not sure what the mother supposedly does in the surgery but not a converstaion I'm looking forward to tomorrow if she hasn't been able to obtain the correct script.

I'd ask the mother two questions.
    1. Why didn't her daughter get a script during normal working hours, especially if her mother works in a surgery?
    2. If her daughter is old enough to have sex why can't she deal with her own presciption charges?

On dodgy territory discussing the daughter's medication with the mother.

If you want to discuss it in general terms just refer her to the Drug Tariff.

If she's had it before from me, according to the PMR, for contraception I would just put OC on the script myself, as it would be in accordance with the GPs wishes.

I think there is a danger we can forget that we aren't there to have a needless row with people who really don't deserve it, whatever the doctors forget to put on the script. (I don't deserve a row, either). If we know its for contraceptive use, we should add it on, IMO. If we are now allowed to do that for CDs, then I don't really see there's an issue there any more.
    ....just my opinion

Surprised that someone who works in a surgery doesn't know this.
They seem to know everything else.
