I wish it wasn't necessary to speak a language other than English in order to work in England! As a locum I do find that there are occasions when I delegate, far more of my job than I am really happy with, to a member of staff who speaks the correct language.

i completely agree! if you live in uk - you should be able to speak some English!
i hate delegating stuff to staff who can converse a language that i cant speak...
but thats a different topic itself!

This is the sort of political correctness which means you cannot test the language capabilities of say, German speaking, Nigerian born Drs who come over to UK for a weekend OOHs locum.

May seem a bit racist when people advertise for this kind of thing, but it beats having a pre-reg being in an area where they will not understand half the people coming in. Heard of this one situation in Derby, where the pre-reg (originally from China) was having great difficulty in a mostly South-east asian ethnic area and even the other staff would chatter in a completely different language.

Reminds me of a day spent as a co-op relief a few years ago (quite a few, now!) in a part of northwest england. I was the only non-ethnic minority member of staff, spoke no english to any customer and had to have everything translated back and forth. Everyone there was very pleasant and freindly, both staff and customers, but it would have been completely pointless for a non-multilingual staff member to work for any period of time there.
