    Prescribed Quantities : What happens if its a fraction?

    Question for all;

    If you receive a prescription for 37.5ml daily of Methadone 1mg/ml Mixture;
    1. How do you measure it accurately.
    2. How do you ensure that the patient actually gets the 37.5ml dose.
    3. How does the NHS work out the payment for the prescribed quantity.

    This is unusual as we are looking at the prescribed quantity being the actual dose as well.

    Where am I?; In the Pharmacy.
    Who are you?; The new Number 2.
    Who is number 1?; You are number 6.
    What do you want?;..................

    Measure 30mls and rest using a syringe, in UK we have 5ml oral which could be used.

    Ach that's just stupid...37.5ml daily? I doubt they were that accurate with their heroin. Just give them 38ml and a pipe-cleaner to swish round the empty bottle. Then tell them to give it a good suck. That should be as close to 37.5ml as you'll get. Then, phone prescriber. First question you ask..'When did you qualify?'....job done. Bloody eejits the lot of them.

    Or perhaps, HOW did you manage to qualify?

    We're getting quite a few scripts for 52.5ml of amoxicillin 125mg/5ml suspension at the moment, 2.5ml tds. Someone probably thinks they are being clever.

    Probably worked out by computer!
    GIGO!
    Anyway, its DT reconstituted mixture so you can claim for 100ml and tell patient to discard remainder.
    Did I try you with my quiz question?
    What can you give to a patient when dispensing a prescription, that you can't give to a patient if prescribed on a prescription. Name two things.
    Amongst the answers are a 5ml spoon and an oral syringe.

    I used to sell a mix of Vits A+D and Beta Carotene for addition to a baby food. The purchasing company insisted the label stated a concentration to 6 decimal places because that is what their formulation said.
    And we sold our 1.6mln units/ml as a standard (guaranteed to one decimal place!)
