    But the footnote in BNF states that they are not prescribable on the NHS. I am interested in what the reason (i.e. legal regulations) for this are.

    antimalarials are prescribable on the nhs - however any doctor prescribing them on the nhs can expect them to be highlighted to their pct and have to justify the prescription. I have dispensed several of these over the years, and i always make sure the prescriber is aware of the situation. If they want to get told off by the pct, then let them - just make sure they are aware.
    Many receptionists, nurses etc print scripts off which the gp will sign off without looking at. Quite a few times i have recieved a call back from a surgery after the wrong person didn't realise the status of the antimalarial - after all the script systems won't block it as it isn't in the blacklist. Whether this is a worrying reflection of the ways medicine is practiced in the uk is beyond me.
