    xmas ?? what xmas?

Are most pct's being difficult about boxing day? i.e sat 26th dec.. warwickshire are not allowing pharmacies whose core hours fall on this day to close.. plus those unlucky employees who work on saturdays are only getting standard pay as it is not an official bank holiday !!! will this happen next year with Christmas day as officially this will be Monday 27th Dec as bank hols can not be at weekends !! staff are furious enough this year !!time to retire or strike !!

Maternity leave will sort that one for me - but I'm a locum anyhow. I remember it happening for boxing day before but it must have been followed by a leap year because the christmas day (and therefore new year's day too) issue did not arise the following year. Surely they will see sense? Well, not so sure!

most pcts are asking core hour shops to open on boxing day - exactly the same as the last time it fell on a saturday. It's not a big deal - people still get the monday off! Just get in one staff member to help cover / do some overtime. If nobody's willing, draw lots. Your boxing day opening will probably be a graveyard shift anyway as everyone will be being dragged round the shops by their kids...

Ensure have plenty of Levonelle in stock. Be prepared for people wanting 'loans' of insulin pens, seretide etc, even though they are from out of town. 'I will ask my Dr to send you a script.' and 'I don't pay' will be the constant refrain.

But they'll get paid for monday 28th dec. even though they won't have to work! And if they're not contracted for mondays, they are still entitled to a days' pay pro-rata! (i.e. if they work 20 hours/week normally, they are entitled to half a days' pay etc...)
Next year, monday dec. 27th and tuesday 28th have been declared Bank Holidays, as has monday 3rd Jan 2011.

You haven't addressed whether we will get 25th December off next year, or not.

Its lovely watching PCTs get so tied up.
    ....just my opinion

I've a sneaking feeling that many pharmacies simply won't open. You can bet no-one from any PCT is going to be working checking up!

I am working Sunday 27th 12-4pm and Monday rota 12-1pm. If pharmacies open on the Saturday, will spoil my fun. We have three local 100 hour pharmacies anyway, so expect them to be open.

sorry but healthcare professionals cannot take time of just because its xmas. Illness dosent take a holiday. U may say GP's do but we are the only source of medication for patients. All hospital staff have to work. Im afraid its part of being a healthcare professional.

If people arnt happy about it then they should have thought about it before deciding to join a healthcare career.
