Technicians who feel they are pharmacists

Has anyone come across any who feel that they are the pharmacist when they really aren't. I have noticed in a few stores I have worked where dispensers/technicans/support staff say stuff such as . 'my dispensary' etc etc. Has anyone had to deal with these people before because I feel it's a problem everywhere!

I'm happy to work with many of those technicians/dispensers who watch everything that happens in their dispensary. In fact, not much would get done without them.
Don't be too harsh on them, especially when you are a pre-reg. Watch and learn and pick up all their good habits and it will boost your score in dispensing practicals.
OK - there are some that are difficult to work with, but that's no different to any other walk of life.

How is it causing a problem?

From my experience I've found that if a tech/dispenser/assistant doesn't take charge of the dispensary then not a lot gets done. I'm a trainee dispenser and I suppose I do see it as my dispensary and take charge of it, this is mainly because I've been their the longest and also because I like everything to be organised and run smoothly.

This is a rather common behaviour usually observed in a minority of pre-reg students and ACT's/technicians (one thinking they know everything the other thinking they do everything), which often results in some rather amusing power struggles/arguements as they battle it out for control of middle ground of the pecking order. A smart pre-reg would use staff staking claim to their dispensary to their advantage, all the best pharmacists do!

A smart Pharmacist makes sure the pre-reg gets lots of 'hands on experience'.
Especially that big pile of scripts waiting over there.

Remember a pre reg pharmacist has little or no hands on experience of working in a pharmacy and a technician may have been working there since the age of 16.

I'm with razorblades kisses on this, I know how she feels. Someone has to crack the whip when the regular pharmacist is away or nothing would get done, or worse still everything left to one person to do.

In large pharmacies often have one of the techs appointed team leader.

It isn't a problem - staff feeling that they have ownership of where they work is a good thing. They have bought into the process.
The problem with pharmacists is that too often we haven't bought into the system, don't feel any ownership of the process and feel like things are inflicted upon us.

Re: Technicians who feel they are pharmacists

I'm perhaps one of them "Techs". I look upon the dispensary as my responsiblity. I don't do all the jobs but I make sure its run exactly as the company and law requires. But my boss (Pharmacist) is the boss and what she says goes.....I trust her 100%, and I hope she feels the same with me.

The company I work for have given me their trust to run the place properly. I can't let them down.

Maybe you've come across a Tech who takes her/his job seriously. But I can assure you, they are not wannabe's. I have never worked with a Tech/Assistant who thought they were above the Pharmacist. I have, unfortunately worked with a couple of Pharmacists who thought we Support staff were beneath them................
