    Locum Rates

    Hi,
I was thinking of going self employed and become a locum.
Can anyone tell me what the going rate of pay is in East Yorkshire?
Are any of the multiples better than any other, indeed should I avoid certain multiples for whatever reason?

    Any advice would be appreciated,

    thanks in advance,

    Mister Pharmacist.

The going rate for a normal day is £25/hour plus travel, ranging from 25p to 40p per mile.

Boots will also pay in two hours travelling, so you can claim 11 hours work (standard nine hour day). They also pay the 40p/mile.

So if you get in a Boots store, and travel say 50 miles each way, you can earn £275 + £40 = £315. Also some of their stores don't even do prescriptions - take a good book.

Mostly with a bit of travel, other companies pay about £225 to £250 per day.

I can also stress that making yourself a Ltd company helps a lot. It costs at least £250 to set up, but with a good accountant can drop your tax bill to 3 or 4k a year - depends how much you earn of course. This is all legal by the way, it's not worth trying to cheat the Inland Revenue - they will catch you!

If you need an accountant post again and I can put you in touch with a good one.

I'm obviously live in the wrong place. I tried to put my locum rates up to £23 and my mileage to 30p as a protest at the wrk put on us by the new contract and I didn't even get a reply let alone the pay rise!

Down here in little old Cornwall.

Trouble is we've only got Moss/Alliance down here. We have a few independents and a couple of Tescos but you either work for Moss or you starve!

Now Alliance Boots is on the cards it may get worse. The only good news on the horizon is that several towns down here will end up with 3-4 Alliance/Boots shops so they will have to sell some to beat the Monopolies Commision, (Why is there only one Monopolies Comission?

So we may get a new chain buying up to give some leverage for raising locum rates.

Sorry to add this but I also charge £25/hour. I used to charge £20 for slow shops, and £25 for busy ones. Then I talked to someone who said he charged £25 for them all. I just put mine up to £25 and nobody questioned it, they just paid me it.

Guess I'd better not mention the £150 for four hours on a Saturday morning deal I had going for six months then!

Is there a shortage of pharmacists in Cornwall? If so just say thats what you charge.

When this site is big enough, we'll form a Pharmacist Union!

    We'll make proper national rates

    We'll take 'em all on.
