I was discussing this issue with a friend, personally I think they should restructure the whole pharmacy training route, where instead of 4 year degree (with token masters) it should be reverted to 3 year degree where people learn pharmacy right from the start I think its stupid to go over the sciences if people are serious about pharmacy then they should take the relevant subjects for a-levels. And following the 3 year degree, we should have 2 years of vocational training were we get paid half the wages so about £9k per year, but we work for 19hrs work and the rest of the time is dedicated to private learning and doing online course sent by the society which need to be completed to satisfactory level. Following the two years people can register as a pharmacist if they have completed the assessment and shown they are competent without the stupid exam, which holds all your effort to ransom!

In america and canada students have to do a biological science degree, for example pharmacology or biochemistry, and then they go to pharmacy school for four years where rather than spend time learning pointless stuff, they delve straight into the stuff tha's relevant to their job. That is why pharmacists in those countries are better trained than here. In this country they'll have to increase the Mpharm by one year (leading to a DPharm), scrap the pointless stuff and incorporate the clinical diploma , hospital and community placements into the degree, and scrap the pre-reg exam.

I agree with you spartacus also I would like to add that we should limit the involvement of multiples in the community sector because its stagnating the development of pharmacy professionals effectively we are told by bunch of non-pharmacy people how to do our job I really feel like setting up a union or something or lobbying group for pharmacists right, because its destroying the profession. Its not about the money because I would be happy to earn 45k but I would like a bit of self respect and independence which the doctors/dentist enjoy!

I know I just think something awful like another peppermint water case will have to happen before the government revokes the concept of large multiples and minimise the chain number and give full control back to pharmacist, It just frustrates me that we pharmacists are held hostage by these tools! Because i think the actual job is really good you can make a difference to peoples life but because of these fools the multiples and regulators (GPhC) they ruin the profession!

if the medical profession had the same problem, it would have resolved by now. We just don't have that in our pharmacy community because the root cause of the problem is when pure retards enter the degree program, get through to 4 years, pass pre-reg and just don't give a toss

I don't think thats the only problem the other thing is community pharmacy sector is dominated by multiples who don't give a damn about the welfare of pharmacist! And the same goes for GPHC

The degree certainly does need revamping, and from what I've been told by my pre-reg tutors, it's not a question of if the degree will be 5 years but when. It does need to be more vocational and include more practical elements such as placements particularly in the later years. The diploma however, whilst generally needed to progress up the career ladder in hospital pharmacy, is still an optional course. Incorporating it into the degree isn't a great idea because it is incredibly demanding for pharmacists to do on top of their usual job, let alone uni students who spend most of their time drinking !
