My random pre- reg related question, answers and events

ok firstly how many weeks private study are you entitled to/should get? or is it entirely dependent on the tutor/pharmacist?

Is it compulsory to keep evidence log sheets, even if you work in close contact with your tutor most of the time, for example in a small community pharmacy?

i ahd to take my private study as annual leave for the exam....as for evidence sheets, i don't think it is compulsory, (could be totally wrong on that one) but like it says on the tin, its evidence...i was told, if its not written down it didn't happen...sods law is that your tutor is not going to remember everything you did, so probably safer to write it all down anyway..that way when you get the competancy standards signed off, you have proof that you did them!

OK so you are doing your pre-reg. You buy a copy of the new pre-reg this September cos your employer is too stingy to buy you one. You then mark, highlight and tag this BNF to make easier. But the question is during the pre-reg exam the following year can you actually use this BNF or would you then have to buy the new MARCH edition and use that? (which would be bad)

whats one of them? i never got one!!

i think the society dictates which edition of the BNF you use (think it is the march edition)...but i wouldn't start flagging just yet...you're only a couple of weeks into pre reg.....the flagging begins when your cramming in revision the week before the exam, and you need to procrastinate...flag now and what will you be able to justify doing in the days leading up to the exam?!?!?!?!!? and i would try and avoid buying...try and borrow one from your shop, hospital, friends

For the June 2011 exam, the BNF required is edition 60 (September 2010) not next March's edition.

You can only give whats on the prescription. Is/should this ALWAYS true or can you use your discretion (as a pharmacist) sometimes to give out something different.

    For example:
1 - Prescription for Betamethasone 1% x200g, when given patients says its too strong and wants the RD 0.025% ones. Can you then change the 1% ones to the RD tubes?
2 - Prescription for Rifampicin 200mg, now the BNF does not list this strength but as the patient needs the medication for a sever infection and can get to doctor for a few days, can you then give him the rifampicin liquid 100mg/5ml (2 5ml spoonfuls as directed)

For example 1 you can't do the switch unless you have a script for it...

in example 2 if it was a severe infection i'd be wanting more of a treatment dose than a piddly sniff of the liquid. Liquid would be fine to give the 200mg dose, but i'd want to question why the dose so low (assuming it is in an adult)?

A doctor comes into the pharmacy and says they want some antibiotics for themselves. You tell them they will need a prescription. The doctor says give me a pen and paper and i will write you a private prescription here. Now what points would you have to bear in mind when processing, dispensing and recording entry in POM register for this type of request?

Is it legal or good practice for a doctor to self diagnose and prescribe for themselves.
On the private prescription itself it is the sufficient for them to simply put ther name and surgery address. Or do you legally also need their home address and GMC number.
When making the entry in POM register do you handle this as a "signed order" or private prescription. Also when making entry in POM resgiter do you need to write in the value charged legally?
