    Bad Pre-reg

    Hey
I just wanted some advice on what I should do because I'm in my third week of my pre-reg in community and have just found out that the pharmacist there lied to me as she told me she had previously tutored 6 other pre-reg's successfully however this was a lie, furthermore, she has only let me into the dispensary for 1 day and everythime I ask to go in or even get her to sign my learning contract she says not to rush into everything. As well as this she isn't really helping me learn much and she doesn't even have all the category A references required. What do you think I should do?

I wouldn't panic about it to be honest, it's only been 3 weeks! Try to work with her, not against her

I'm afraid that I don't agree, I think you should find a new placement now, if you are sure you have been lied to.

However, you and I could be wrong: I hope bambalec is right.

You have already learned something - not to take people at face value and believe what they say without checking. You should have tried to speak to at least one of her previous students. It may not be too late to do so. They know her and might be able to advise you better than us.

Just how big of a lie was she telling? Has she trained any pre-regs successfully through to qualification?

How did you find out she was lying? If you asked some of the dispensing staff, they might not have worked there for as long and not be fully aware of how many pre regs had trained under her. If you've not had experience before your tutor may feel you need some time doing healthcare/OTC work just to make sure you understand that stuff first, since it does play a big part in the exam and day to day practice.

The tutor I've got stated in our first meeting that since I hadn't worked for almost a year (was focusing on my finals) that I should use time in healthcare to brush up on my OTC knowledge, then about 2 weeks into my pre reg she would put me into the dispensary. Not such a bad idea, since it's a large one with about 4 assistants and 2 pharmacists at any one time, different to what I'm used to.

Sometimes, to deal with an extra body they just need time to think about how to fit you into the schedule and the tutor might just want more time to see what kind of person you are. If it's a multiple you're working for and the store manager is overbearing and unappreciative of the needs of pharmacy, the pharmacist might have trouble trying to maintain a good working pharmacy. I've been in that kind of store before, with the manager refusing to hire trained dispensers and using folk from other departments as stand ins.
