    Practice Calculations for Sept Exam

I thought we could start a new thread with practice questions for those sitting/re-sitting the exam in September as the June paper was so leftfield with some of the questions.

Here is my first contribution to the effort.

If 212 pre-reg students failed the exam in June and have to re-sit the exam is Sept at a cost of £200, as a percentage how much does this reduce th RPSGB's pension deficit of Twelve million pounds?

    A. 5%

    B. 3.5%

    C. 0.35%

    D. 0.035%

    E. 1%

I am assuming my own calculations are correct as I am one of those loose cannon pharmacists who never had to sit a calculation exam!

But seriously, if any of you can post the questions that were in the June paper it would help everyone in Sept greatly. Can anyone remember the gist of a question with a graph in it?

    hehe, love the OP

exact q's from june have finally floated out of my head, but general pointers:

when dealing with Vd, dose must be in GRAMS and blood levels must be in mg/mL (where Vd = dose/blood levels). There were two questions in the paper that required this formula; in both instances the units needed adjusting before plugging into the equation

For that q on number of L-thyroxine tablets, the dose worked out at 8.75. You supply 4 x 2mg and 2 x 0.5mg to make the formula. You use 2 x 0.5mg tablets because you will half one of them to make the formula. Question simply wants correct quantities of ingredients; it doesn't say what you will do with the 0.5mg tablets. If you get what I mean

Someone in another thread has posted an american pre reg calculations paper. Its about 120 calculations. I had a flick over it and it will make excellent practice. I suggest everyone works their way through it. Even if you have passed the pre reg exam!

    OK. Question 2:

Stevie C decides that the previous Xmas parties for the hard working staff at the RPSGB were a little excessive in todays current recession and has decided to make a few cuts for this year. He orders 55 bottles of the much cheaper Krug champagne at £117 per bottle instead of the usual Cristal champagne at £149 per bottle. The 2kg of caviar needed has also been downgraded from Beluga at £99 per 30g to Sevruga at £49 per 30g.
How much money has Stevie C SAVED the RPSGB and pharmacists of the UK overall?

A - Hang on, sorry, can't give you any answers as I dont seem to have a calculator to hand.......

    B -

    C -

    D-

    E-

I would be absolutely tearing my hair out by now!! I fully sympathize with your situation. It's bad enough knowing you've failed, but still not knowing where you've failed and by how much would be horrible. I would ring and ring the pre-reg dept, if still no joy, and failing that ring the main switchboard and keep pestering them as well - explain your situation to them and if you don't get any joy, keep ringing back. They will soon want to get rid of you and will get you sorted probably quicker than an e-mail or voice mail.
