No - if it was as simple as that I wouldn't have been stumped on it !

    1% w/w is 1g per 100g so in 200g there would be 2g. 4G/100G = X/200G. That's how I tried it...

Don't forget, you're adding extra mass to the 200g, so it isn't as simple as you've worked out.

I've started practising calcs this week and I'd like to think I'm pretty good at them (although I am struggling with a q at the moment which I might post up later). However if maths isn't your strong point I would suggest starting from day 1 of pre-reg.

Yeah you can start now if you like - the Pharmaceutical Press have got a couple of books on calculations which might be in your uni library. I remember seeing some links on here to calculations practice as well.

I can pm you the answer if you want, although the method you'll have to figure out yourself The second calamine one is a bit of a toughie as well.

Re: Stuck with Pre-Reg exam calculations?

This one I do actually need some help on - I'd be grateful for a bit of input here.

A patient needs to use a 1 in 10 000 potassium permanganate solution for wound washing. In your pharmacy you have tablets of 400 mg potassium permanganate. Using (an) intact tablet(s) you need to prepare an intermediate solution such that the patient will then dilute this 10- fold to obtain a solution of the requisite concentration.

Which of the following is/are correct?
    1) The intermediate solution has a concentration of 1.0 mg/mL
    2) You need to use two tablets to prepare the intermediate
    solution
    3) The volume of the intermediate solution is 500 mL

    A - 1,2,3
    B - 1,2 only
    C - 2,3 only
    D - 1 only
    E - 3 only

I've been able to work out statement 1 being correct and 3 being incorrect. Can't seem to figure out whether 2 is correct - by their logic using one tablet would make 400ml. What's the reasoning behind two tablets ?

All pre regs should do a calculation every day. Calcs are major stumbling block in exam and incorrect calcs have caused many deaths.

Re: Stuck with Pre-Reg exam calculations?

I've done over 120 this week - does that make up for not starting in Aug ? I think those who have struggled with calcs in uni and in whom maths isn't a strong point should start very early on. I had no proper assessment of my calcs skills so far in pre-reg until yesterday, but I'm quite good at calcs and maths on the whole.
