Hello All, Just stumbled upon this forum when I was looking for rates of pay for locums, and am very glad I did. It's good to be able to interact with other pharmacists directly and get advice etc. I am a self employed locum pharmacist and have a few websites that I run as a hobby. One of them is a website on going through the menopause naturally and another one is on tips for sleeping better. I go through phases of feeling OK about pharmacy and feeling frustrated at times. I guess that's normal with any profession where you've been practising for a while. I registered in 1982, yes, one of the more "senior" pharmacists, and then spent 15 years in France. I practised pharmacy in France too once the equivalence came in (1988). I have worked in several of the fields of pharmacy including hospital, clinical research and community, both as an employed pharmacist as well as a locum and have also been manager and superintendant pharmacist. Anyhows, just thought I'd introduce myself and say hello ![]() And thanks Elaine, for the forum. Cheers, Nimsy PS where do I choose an avatar from?

Hi all, quick intro from me, stumbled across the site in a quiet 5 mins at work (something interesting got past the approved list computer system! Obviously, we're OK to give out the drugs but not responsible enough to resist spending the whole day surfing the net.) As the username goes, I'm a part timer (3 days a week I slope around doing the occasional script, the rest I'm slogging it out with my 4 young children, and they call the paid bit the 'work'?) Hope I get chance to get to know you all, at least till the bosses notice the web stats and ban me ![]() PT x |

Hi Zoggite, Don't know about Belgian qualified, but for a UK qualified one, not very difficult if you speak French. When I first went to France, there was no equivalence of the pharmacy degree and no way to work as a pharmacist unless you were qualified in France.Until the EEC and the equivalence, which came in 1988. At that time French pharmacists spent 2 years longer studying than the British ones. By the time the equivalence came into force, I had already learnt French. SoI found a job first, and then registered with the Pharmaceutical Society for that premise. I also had to register with the equivalent of the PCT for each area I worked in. I had to register with 2 PCTs as I was working part time as a Community pharmacist and part time as a Hospital pharmacist in a different town. As well as a job, I needed a letter from the British P'soc and a criminal records check and certificate (fairly standard procedure in France). Didn't have to do any pre-reg or any registartion exams. This was 20 years ago (don't know if things have changed now). I returned to the Uk about 10 years ago. However jobs are not that easy to come by, as there are no multiples there. Each pharmacy has to be owned by a pharmacist, and the owner pharmacist has to spend a minimum amount of time at the pharmacy, so demand for pharmacists is not great. Also there is (or was anyway)no concept of locum work - you would have to be employed. The system for social security reimbursement for Rx is very different too. Partially reimbursed by state and other part by health insurance. You could offer to work voluntarily for the first month to learn the ropes. Hope this helps. PM me if you need more info. Nimsy
