How about naming the ranks using part of the name of the top poster for that month, based on the number of postings in that month. The rest of the name can be made up of the name of the top poster from three months ago. You would also need to switch any postings that where made in the wrong thread to another thread entirely without warning.
This is quite straightforward - just like our payment system.
