Yeah you're right, they're not worth bothering about if they have that opinion. I'm on the look out for hospital jobs at the minute and so I'll let you know how it all goes. Thanks again guys, you've made me realise that I'm being a bit daft by letting one woman's comment doubt my career path.

I am a hospital pharmacist, and the majority of my technician/dispenser colleagues started in community pharmacy, including our dispensary manager. Yes, you might not have done the aseptic training that a hospital student technician would have done, but most hospitals would train you from scratch in this area anyway, as procedures vary from hospital to hospital. I find that community trained technicians pick up the dispensary side of the job very quickly, and bring a lot to the job. Go for it if you get the opportunity!

That's really good to know that the majority of your staff are from community!

Could that be because hospitals are reluctant to train technicians from scratch?
Is it that they don't have to because they get suitably trained technicians from community?

My friend has gone to a community hospital as shall I once I have completed my NVQ 3 - they do take on NvQ 2 Dispensers and train them if appropriate. The NHS training for NVQ 3 is rather good, it involves one day a week in a college or uni then the rest of the study time at home. The only downside is, and it is slightly strange (and it does happen) , the hospital do not guarantee you will get the NVQ3 placement. There are other courses available , such as patient counselling and progressing to ACT.
Like community hospital and 'retail' Pharmacy, there are many pros and cons to both, one is not better then the other. Personally the advancement for me would be community hospital.

I understand that one is not better than the other but it's nice to hear people's views on each of the working environments. It's also nice to know that whether you're going from community to hospital or vice versa, that previous experience will be valued

I think it's nice to have a mix of people with different backgrounds. I have been fortunate at times to work with so many different folk with a wide variety of work backgrounds. I have learnt so much from these experienced and knowledgeable people. Hopefully, they've learnt a bit from me too!!! Variety is the spice of life etc.....

A hospital patient has no choice but to wait. You can't get out of your bed and head off to another hospital down the road.

Maybe true but still no excuse for rudeness which is all I've witnessed when in community
